| Why Im
Proud to Be a Cadet When I first joined Cadets, I had poor leadership skills, poor communication skills, I was afraid to talk to large crowds, and the list goes on. I joined cadets because my friends joined. Not because I thought I was going to improve on all the above mentioned skills. Little did I know 4 years later I would have a promising career in the Canadian Cadet Movement, and possibly in the Canadian Forces. When I first joined Cadets was 'a thing to do on Wednesday nights' and nothing more. I didn't tell anyone that didn't need to know until about the time I received my green star. I was not proud to be a cadet. If I had to talk to cadets, I carried my uniform with me in a garbage bag. Sort of like putting a paper bag over my head, eh? Now a days, when I am required to walk to Cadets, I walk in my full uniform. 120 paces a minute, not that it matters. I form my beret regularly, and polishing my boots has gone from being a science to an art. I look for opportunitys to wear my uniform. When people ask if I am part of a youth group, I reply without hesitation "Yes I am. Im a member of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets." So, now you know I am proud to be a cadet. But, why? Good question. My answer. Why not? Why wouldn't you be proud to be part of an organisation like cadets? Why wouldn't you be proud to be part of an organisation that good people take time out of their lives to dedicate to it? Why wouldn't you be proud? 4 years into Cadets, I can now get in front of two corps and go on for 4 minutes about the spoon. Sure, it wasn't made in 19 odd 6 by Edward T. Spoonathin, and yes, it's total nonsense, but at least I can do it. I can give drill, teach lectures, and walk down the side of a wall backwards (With ropes, I might add!). Im proud of being part of an organisation that is 125 years old. 125 years! We must be doing SOMETHING right! Im proud to have an affiliated unit. Im proud to be able to participate in actives for veterans. Im proud to march down Main Street in November in front of my peers. Im proud to take part in Cadets Caring for Canada. Im proud to be a cadet. Im proud. C/MCpl M Ward |
