Background & History

Whitehorse Cadet Summer Training (WCSTC) was opened in 1973 and was located in downtown Whitehorse at Yukon Hall. Indoor training was conducted in several Whitehorse schools with outdoor activity conducted in the Carcoss and Skagway training areas. In 1983, the Department of National Defence leased the unused Wolf Creek Juvenile Corrections Centre from the Yukon Territorial Government. The current facility was officially opened on July 12, 1984.

In 1990, Canadian Forces Northern Area, Whitehorse Detachment, moved to WCSTC. The camp and facilities were renamed "Boyle Barracks" in honour of Colonel Joseph Boyle, a First World War hero from the Yukon.

In addition to the Canadian cadets, 12 army cadet from the United Kingdom come to Whitehorse as part of the International Army Cadet Exchange program.[1]

The staff is comprised of approximately 70 Cadet Instructors Cadre (a sub-component of the Canadian Forces Reserve Force), Regular & Primary Reserve Force members, civilian instructors and civilian employeesj and staff cadets. Staff Cadets are senior cadets, usually 16 to 18 years of age who are employed to assist with the everyday supervision and training of the course cadets. Prior to the arrival of the course cadets, the staff undergoes refresher training on instruction, safety, leadership, and training centre policies. [1]
