That's the way I think it should be. Lanyards for senior parade positions, and not for any odd course. If SIs, Techies, AIs, even Bandies can't wear lanyards, there should be no exception for SLCs, it's just another course.

At my squadron we don't wear lanyards, but I think I'm going to start asking around about the senior parade positions wearing them, they look so snazzy!

In 842, cpls and up. ALL seniors (parade positions). the cpls get the thin ones, whereas sergeants and up get the thick ones. As for web belts, only parade positions, band, and flag party. We only wear these 2 "accessories" on CO's parades (1st mon. of every month)....I have both, I feel sooooo special. yay, lanyards and web belts

We have white lanyards for the drill team, and a yellow one for the drill team commander.. and we dont let SLs wear theirs.. coz a) the only SL person is on the drill team and b) we'd have to allow our two AIs.. and three SIs wear theirs..

That's what happens when it's left up to the discretion of the CO. Now imagine if the rest of the standards were like that...

Is there any RCAF or RAF basis for lanyards as an accoutrement?

I cannot provide the details of what granted the wear of them, and hopefully someone can do this after me, but I can attest that they existed and were worn. I worked at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 240 museum for a time, and one of the uniforms we had in the 'treasure trove' was an RCAF tunic circa WWII, (an Officer's, I believe...memory of this is a bit foggy) with the "traditional" white lanyard, on (I believe) the left shoulder. I could very easily be mistaken as to which shoulder it was on, but it was in the current style of braid, etc.

    Anyone have something more concrete?

ONLY WHITE LANYARDS ARE TO BE WORN ON THE UNIFORM.
NOT RED,OLIVE DRAB, OR ANY OTHER COLOUR OR SHADE EXCEPT WHITE.

Lanyards can be think or thin and still be of a conservative pattern.

But thanks for the big words on "White only."

If your Squadron breaks the rules, it's up to your ACO to catch that on their inspections. But why would you post it publicly?

I fixed that. I pefer a thinner lanyard myself and thank-you. If I could make it bigger and bolder that what I have it I would.

Coloured lanyards look bad - but not as bad as the maroon whistle ribbon worn by an Air AI who folded the ribbon to about 3", cutting a slot in the upper end, and then buttoning this abomination to his left breast tunic pocket, with the whistle dangling from the bottom. I kid you not.

CO's discretion. It's ceremonial, so it all depends on what the CO wants for that ceremony.

Maroon ribbon? what!? What year did he/she go on AI. We give kids FOX 40 whistles to be used at fitness testing, sports comp, etc, etc. Thats really weird, I've never heard of that.

Pre-2001... I saw the guy at a band clinic. It was a metal whistle, not a Fox 40. Wierd.
