Hey everyone!!!! hey i know i havnt been on for a while but oh well what are you guys up to? how many of you have had a tour of a navy ship? i went last weekend and it was really cool...... there were heaps of navy staff like this: :sea: and a few less like this: :mcd: i even saw someone who looks after the seasprites like this: :air: lol well have any atc people seen inside an aeroplane belonging to the airforce well it will be great to hear from you again from Catherine |
Please answer me i feel sooooooooooooo like a loner right now i mean 5 people have viewed it but no one luvs me.... |
haha alrighty then :p I've been on a few tours of Navy ships and stayed on a few too. Its cool :) |
Well, I've been inside every type that the RNZAF flies, the only exception (kinda), is the old Macchis, which i never got to sit in. |
Hmmm I've toured a few Navy ships over the years... the ones that I have physically been at Sea (in some cases less than 2hrs) on are: HMAS BRISBANE, HMAS PERTH, HMAS BALIKPAPAN, HMAS TORRENS, HMAS SUCCESS, HMAS SHOALWATER, HMAS PROTECTOR (and MV SEAHORSE HORIZON as she was later registered as), HMAS MANOORA, HMAS KANIMBLA, HMAS IPSWICH, HMAS PALUMA, HMAS MERMAID, HMAS SHEPPARTON, HMAS LEEUWIN, HMAS OTTAMA, HMAS MELBOURNE, HMNZS CANTERBURY, HMNZS TE MANA, USS CAVELLA, USS CONSTELLATION, USS O'BRIEN, USS CHOSIN, USS JOHN YOUNG, USS BLUE RIDGE, USS ESSEX, USS GERMANTOWN, USS JUNEAU, USS MOBIL BAY, USS STETHEM, HMCS REGINA, HMCS OTTAWA, HMS TRAFALGAR, STS YOUNG ENDEAVOUR and a couple of Korean ships that I can't quit remember the names of or pronounce. There are a couple of others but I can't remember which at the moment :s |
Jeremey, lot of ships, and for a grunt like me, doesnt make sense! :p ;) :) :D |
I'd never actually stopped to count... but yeah it is a few.... To make it a little easier on you Chuck.... HMAS = Aussie Ship, HMNZS= Kiwi Ship, USS= Yanky Ship, HMCS= Canadian ship, STS= Sail Training Ship, HMS= Pommy Ship, MV= Merchant Ship.... word after the designator is the Ship name. |
Actually I knew the HMAS, HMS, HMCS, HMNZS, USS etc and all the titles before that, but the names of the ships to what class? that over my head. Question: How long have you served in the RAN and how did you managed to serve or worked on some of the foreign ships especially the Koreans and 11 of the American Ships (USS.)? What was the nature of your work? I am just curious actually. And the only one I can't remember is the title used for Russian Ships? USSR? |
Doesn't MV stand for Motor Vessel? HMA Ships Kanimbla, Manoora, Success, Melbourne, Sydney, Stuart Parramatta. HMNZS Te Keha (I think thats how its spelt). STS Windward Bound (scary ship). I lived on Kanimbla/Manoora for a week about a year ago. We used to get confused sometimes because we slept on Manoora, but spent day times on Kanimbla! |

I did qualify my comments that some of those ships I spent as little as two hours on underway.... possibly a little less. Most of the foreign ships I got to check out was during a 10month posting as the Visiting Ship's Liaison Officer... I organised all the visits of Foreign Ships to Australia from Gladstone to Adelaide (excluding Hobart unless it was a nuclear visit). The way I got to spend time on them at sea was I would assist the Pilot taking them out of port then catch a ride with the Pilot Boat back to port (usually from 3M out to sea). I spent 5 days on USS CONSTELLATION sailing from off the coast of Adelaide to Sydney. I spent a few months on exchange with the Canadian Navy and was on HMCS REGINA for a while. The 3 Kiwi Frigates might as well be home ported in Sydney or Melbourne I swear they spend more time here than NZ so opportunities to cross deck are abundant. The Korean was again as VSLO when the Korean Training Squadron visited Sydney (a Tanker, a Destroyer, 2x Frigates & 2x River Corvettes). The US Ships were a combination of from being VSLO, scabbing lunch on them in Dili (a nice change after eating rat packs from 3-4weeks) or having a look on them during RIMPAC. The US Amphibs (ESSEX, G'TOWN, JUNEAU) were during Ex Tandem Thrust pretty much just visiting them for meetings etc while we spent 13 days in formation anchorage :( The subs was a matter of right place right time.... I was undertaking Enhanced Selection Process at HMAS STIRLING as part of my ADFA Single Service Training and was supposed to spend 4 days on HMAS Collins which was brand new then... she ruptured all her hydraulics doing an emergency blow the day we got there so the Sub Commander got two of us onto USS CAVELLA for the exercise and we cross decked to HMS TRENCHANT after two days. |

was that list long enough? well i have only ever been on one last saturday and it was called HMNZS Te Mana and i know that S.S stands fo steam ship and T.S (lol this one is kinda obvious) stands for training ship ;) our unit is going to the navy open day though so i'll be able to tour HMNZS Philomel lol i think thats how its spelt.... i hav cadets tonight so im kinda happy!!! :sea: i look like this but with a girls cap and a bun... lol |
People luv me lol i feel SOOOOO happy!!! :) |
I've been on one when i was younger....like....10 or so. But other than that....no ships.... I've been in a sea king helicopter over INDY....that was kewl. |
Of course, Ex-HMAS Vampire and Orion don't really count towards this. :p 9 years in the RAN does tend to give you more of an opportunity to spend time on ships than 3 years in the ANC! |
hmm I've been on a few, and I know I've been on more than I will list because I don't remember the names of a lot of the ships we got tours of on various ACTs. HMAS Kanimbla, HMAS Manoora, HMAS Sucess, HMAS Brisbane, HMS Northumberland, HMAS Farncomb. < thats all I remember the names of :) |
Ummm, now this might require some thought... HMA's ARUNTA, TOBRUK, MELBOURNE, STUART, DARWIN, ADELAIDE, ANZAC, MV's SEAHORSE MERCATOR AND SEAHORSE SPIRIT. That was whilst I was in the navy. Prior to then I have visited USS MOBILE BAY, CONSTELATION, ENTERPRISE, HMA's BRISBANE, KANIMBLA, SYDNEY, HUON.... I think thats about it. Oh and been on one of the COLLINS Class boats, cant for the life of me think which one!?!? Oh and have had my bum in a Squirrel, Jet Ranger, Blackhawk, SeaHawk, Iriqous, Hornet, orion, Hercules (J H & E), Maachi, PC9... I think thats it... |
Hmm thats what I forgot..... HMAS JERVIS BAY, MV MERCATOR, TRV TREVALLY, NTV ARDENT, DL SEAL & DL DUGONG. |
Who thought up the names for the Diving Launches?? SEAL, yeah I can run with that, and SHARK sounds cool, But DUGONG!?!?!? DL Launch “Big Blubbery n Ugly” What were they thinking? :-P Oh can I count Roy and HG (HMAS ARUNTA’s RHIB’s) ;-) |
DL DUGONG was never a "Navy Vessel" it was procured and registered by DMS which is why she isn't grey like the other two so blame DMS.... she's much nicer fitout that SHARK & SEAL. Sure you can count Roy & HG... they are greater than 5m LOA and are commercially registered. |
Underway/Extended period of time on: USS Clark (FFG-11) USS Warrior (MCM-10) USS Cormorant (MHC-57) HMAS Kanimbla (hull number escapes me...LPA-41?) USNSCS Grayfox (TWR-825) Tours USS Ramage (DDG-61) USS Miami (SSN-755) USS Oakridge (ARDM-1) HMAS Farncomb (SSG-74) HMAS Melbourne (FFG-05) USCGC Neah Bay (Hull numbers I can't recall) USCGC Bristol Bay ('' '') USCGC Sundew (" ") I think that's everything. If it isn't, oh well  |
I've done tours on HMAS GERALDTON and HMAS CANBERRA. I've sat in/walked through RAAF 707, Hawk 127, C-130H Hercules, P-3C Orion, a USN F/A-18 Hornet, RAN Seahawk and a US Army Blackhawk (including 2.1 hours flying time!). Oh, and there is also the walkthrough tour of a civilian Ilyushin(sp?) freighter that always seems to be at Pearce... On top of that, I've got up close and personal with a USN F-14 Tomcat, PC-9s, Macchis, and a couple of other US Army helicopters. |

Oh and I forgot to throw in the F-14's, EA-6 Prowler, S-3 Viking and something else that I got my bum into the first time I was on a carrier. The second time (connie) wasnt as good, cos you couldnt get close to the planes or into them... |
I was allowed in a sea sprite on board a navy anzac class frigate |

What kind of Regatta is it? |
Enterprise? Cool :D HMAS Melbourne is in dock in Wellington at the moment I believe. Been in all curent RNZAF aircraft minus the 757 and B200. Also been in a RAAF B737 BBJ, Challenger 604, Falcon (model escapes me), and a hawk simulator ;) |
I understand other knots....like at paluma cup we had to do a series of things.....but not splices??? That's where i thought it a bit odd kass....sorry. |
I don't think anyone was disagreeing with you Tam.... I can't think of why they would need to know splices at a sailing regatta but it could depend on the nature of the regatta.... I mean c'mon have any of you tried to splice double braid?? :( I did the other day (part of a course)... quickly resorted to hot knife and heatshrink. |
