Dear 12 Year Old Me

Rate this Entry
Dear 12 Year old me,

You have no idea what you are getting your self into. You have the top of the world on your shoulders and everything that will ever define you is starting right now. within the next 5 years, you will become a sailor, a gunner, a Drill and Ceremonial Grad, A Drill and Ceremonial Staff member. You will learn how to shoot rifles, and make flawless routines through precise drill movements. You will make friends that will last a life time and memories that will last even longer. You will gain awards and medals. You will cry when you leave your summer homes (Quadra and Blackdown) for the last time. When you pass the parade square, one last time in your Dress Uniform you are going to go down on one knee and you kiss the parade square because that is how much it means to you. The most amount of pain you are going to experience is on on that parade square. Your combats and work dress are going to be drenched in sweat. You are going to bleed a lot and are going to try so hard to fight the tears when you first received your Lord Strathcona Medal, and knowing how honored you are because you are the first to ever receive it in your corps. You are going to sacrifice a lot of blood trying to sew on all your badges and you will be frustrated with other cadets, staff, along with officers. However, you are going to learn to be one strong individual and no one will be able to know what you went through to get as far as you have. You have one more year in cadets and you need to go at it whole heartedly, intensely, and make one last impression and leave your mark.

Dear 12 year old me, if only you knew what you are getting into.

I think it is something that somehow everyone who has succeeded in the cadet/military program can relate too in some way or another.

I read your entry and flashes of past memories kept popping in my mind... A couple of years ago, I found myself with a new Corps...new Officers, etc.... we sat down at the conference table to realize that the 5 Officers sitting there where all part of the same Corps 20 years ago as senior Cadets...

Thanks for reminding us that once, we were young too...(and maybe, just maybe, have become a little wiser with the years)
