In 2008 the Cadet Program Update (CPU) was officially implemented for the first year of cadet training and will continue each year until 2012 when the program update is complete. The update addresses both local training and summer training, re-evaluating and re-designing the entire training system for all three elements.

| Close-up of an Avanti Model 853C Legend EX Air Rifle. The Avanti Model 853C Legend EX is a .177 calibre (4.5mm), single-stroke, pneumatic, air rifle manufactured by Daisy Outdoor Products and is the standard marksmanship training rifle for the Canadian Cadet Organizations. Though cadets may have an opportunity to train or compete using smallbore and largebore rifles such as the Lee-Enfield .22 and .303; or the C-7 service rifle, the Canadian Cadet Marksmanship Program is based around the 853C. Originally part of the Powerline series, the 853-series rifles are now part of Daisy's Avanti line of competition grade air rifles.
The Model 853C is based on the standard Model 853 Legend air rifle and modified to fit the needs of the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets. The two major differences between the 853 and 853C are are the capability of the 853C to load the rifle using either a five round, auto-indexing clip or a single-shot adapter; and, that the muzzle velocity of the 853C is set at 495 feet/second (150.8 m/s).
