If you would have asked me eight years ago, where I would have imagined myself to be today, I wouldn't have known what to tell you. I wouldn't have been able to tell you that I've climbed a mountain, jumped into the ocean and traveled from British Columbia to Ontario all before the age of eighteen. Looking back at the first night standing on the parade square to this point in time right now, I never would have guessed I would have been the places I have been, done the things I have, and met people that have changed my life.
No guts. No glory.
All was normal, practicing for our Annual Ceremonial Review (in 10 days),
When at sunset, I stood my band easy while waiting for the XO to be present.
I heard my Cox'n say "Sir, Captain Allen is here" ... I asked myself ("why is my dad here? :s")

Well a few minutes later, my XO was had said he had a special presentation...
He said "I would like to call Petty Officer First Class Allen up"
So I marched up, and my XO made a very nice speech... I still didn't know why,

Then he announced that I am being presented the Navy League Medal of Excellence.
My mom as the Navy League President of Belleville, and the VP of the Navy League of Canada, was working and was un able to present me with my medal because she was working unfortunately, but my best friends mom, XO, and dad were all there to support me.

This medal will sit beside my Service Medal, as well as my Legion Medal of Excellence, and when I take off my Medals, they will will sit on my Hope Chest beside my CDS Coin of Excellence.

I apologize if I sound like I'm bragging!!!

I got all four of these awards in less than a year.
Overall, I feel my hard work and dedication has really beed noticed and paid off !!
Unfortunately, it is sad to see that former PO's at my corps(who left, because they did nothing....) are making unnecessary Facebook statuses about how I get things to easily.
But I have worked 110% at everything, and if you have seen my previous posts, you would know I have had many troubles along my journey...
I'm just gonna brush that off, because in the end, I'M the one who worked so hard, and I'M the one who needs to be proud of myself..

Thank you for reading! :seasalute:

The work year is winding down as the Awards Banquet announced our new commanders for the next year. National Medals were given out to very deserving cadets. This blog post is to focus a recap of what my year consisted of.

It was an inspection year. The United States Air Force sent a Colonel down to our unit to inspect us. We earned the highest marks and got a perfect score. The Colonel was really impressed with the way our unit ran. We were cited to earn the Distinguished Unit with Merit award once again for this school year. With that, we had to ensure the unit worked really hard so we could confirm the award.

The year started out, I was a returning second year cadet, and I was given the rank of c/ Staff Sergeant and I was one of the NCO's charged with teaching Drill and Ceremonies. As the year progressed, I was named director of the UAV program in the unit, as well as the director of operations in KHAS. We went to Marseilles National Guard base to have our yearly training (in short: bootcamp for the first year cadets)

By the time the year settled in, I got bumped up to c/ Techincal Sergeant. And they announced the commencement of the Drill Season. I was put in command of the Armed Exhibition team as well as made one of the varsity commanders.

My team had a rivalry against another unit's drill team and we wanted a little pay back from last year's season (They took the championship trophy during last year's season). We succeeded with having an undefeated regular season. We took back our trophy. I was promoted to c/Master Sergeant after a successful season. Later, we had a couple off season drill competitions which my tea that I personally commanded placed first in its category.
I won a knock out medal after knocking out 300 other cadets during the drill knock- outs.

After a successful drill season, I had to put my full attention to our wings qualifications and are still working on them. I'm one step away from getting my UAV wings. I was surprised when the cadet promotion board called me out for a surprise promotion. I was presented wit the rank of c/Senior Master Sergeant.

The year ended with the Dining Out (awards banquet). There, I was awarded the Military Order of the World Wars Medal and as well as my Drill Team awards. We also named our two new Wing Commanders for the next school year. Also, Air Force HQ got back to us and confirmed us getting our Distinguished Unit with Merit award.

This year ended on a good note for the most part.
Here's pictures from this year. [: :airsalute:

From time to time a cadet member of CW will start a thread looking for help to raise standards; or building morale or numbers in their corps or squadron. A few years ago I posted a response to one of those pleas for help that I recently stumbled upon again when I was searching for something else. It still seemed pretty relevant so I thought I'd edit it a bit and post it as a blog.

'How do I improve morale in my corps?'

The answer to "fixing" a corps is not just having more meetings or more sports nights or more extra-curricular activities. These are tools that can be used to help you improve morale but they aren't something that you should rely on entirely. Like a lot of cold remedies, they mask the symptoms but don't actually cure the illness.

Here are some of the many keys to success I've seen at my and other corps/squadrons that can start you in the right direction.

Be Realistic

Morale doesn't go from being in the dumps to sky-high all at once. The people you are going to influence most are the first-years and the fruits of that influence won't be ripe until they get to be seniors.

Don't try and do everything at once.

There is no magic bullet that will fix things. The Sr NCOs have to work together to find small, realistic, attainable goals and everyone then works towards achieving them. Build on successes and don't get sidetracked by the inevitable failure. And recognize that not achieving a goal doesn't necessarily make it a failure. If there is an improvement, it's a success - but it's also an invitation to adjust the plan and keep at it.

Good morale requires good NCOs

Officers provide direction, guidance, overall leadership and support but it's the NCOs who do the actual heavy lifting when it comes to leadership at the corps. I won't go into the actual mechanics of leadership because you can read that in any book but let me point out something I'll bet most people never consider when they read that old nugget of wisdom...

Leadership - The art of influencing human behaviour so as to accomplish a mission in the manner desired by the leader.

The human behaviour you’re trying to influence is morale. You can influence it by having your behaviour be what you want theirs to be. People's behaviour often changes to reflect those around them and a positive demeanor coming from their leaders can go a long way to building morale.

A good corps cannot be built without a good foundation

And the foundation I'm talking about is the actual training programme. At my squadron, as it is with many others, cadets do almost all of the actual instructing. Cadets spend most of their time in a class of some kind so it is important that what is taught is taught correctly. That doesn't just mean that the teaching points are covered but that proper instructional techniques are used. That means that the instructors are prepared and they are using effective teaching methods including training aids.

Nothing kills a class faster than the instructor standing there reading off the lesson plan and maybe jotting a few notes or the occasional lame stick figure on the blackboard.

Be dynamic. Be prepared. Be committed to the lesson. Every single lesson is important because it is preparing the cadet for the next lesson and the next training level.

Find a rallying point

As weird as it sounds, nothing builds unit cohesion like being unique - together.

If your corps is named after or affiliated with a former or current CF unit, adapt and adopt things that make THEM unique. Find out what their traditions are and adapt them for the corps. Get corps t-shirts made. Find out the Regiment's official march and make it the ring-tone on your phone. If it's a highland regiment, organize a cadet-friendly Robbie Burns Night. If you have a pipe band, on FTXs have a duty piper pipe the cadets to bed and pipe them awake in the morning.

Do whatever you can to find a focus for their esprit de corps and get all the seniors to promote it in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

We were affiliated with 441 Silver Fox Tactical Fighter Squadron before it was stood down. We adopted the black and white checkerboard recognition pattern they put on their aircraft as our squadron "colours". When we are at sports comps, everyone wears, at least, black and white and, especially, checkerboard items of clothing. I found a toy silver fox that we've adopted as our mascot. We've christened him "Sgt Sterling" (as in sterling silver) and the First years vie for the honour of "escorting" Sgt Sterling when we are away on trips.

Me, personally, I went totally cadet-geek and got vanity plates for my car that said "102SQDRN" (102 SQN was already a taken as a non-vanity plate number). When I'm in civvies at cadet functions, I will often carry my gear in a checkerboard Dickies backpack on which I've sewn a sqn badge. All kinds of things like that are possible.

Enthusiasm is infectious and you must be the carrier.

Team Building and Fun

Never underestimate the value of fun in team building. The Level 1 QSP has some fun little team building exercises that require no equipment, little time and are a load of fun. If you have the time, they can be done during break or before forming up or after dismissal or any time at all, really, so long as it doesn't interfere with what is supposed to be going on.

Away from training nights, arrange for everyone in your section, platoon or whole corps to do something together. See a film; come over and play video games (especially multi-player ones); have a bbq; playing ultimate Frisbee in the park, whatever. [NOTE: if this is not organized through your corps staff, be very clear to all involved that this is not an official cadet activity]. At first, you might have small numbers showing up but numbers will grow the more often you do them. When I was a cadet, we'd utilize the telephone tree to get as many members of the sqn to show up at a movie or some other event as possible. We'd all show up wearing our sqn jackets or t-shirts and walk in as a group. I'll tell you, unit pride goes through the roof doing stuff like that.

This isn't an exhaustive list. It's only meant to spark ideas and not really meant to be a checklist of things to do. Get your heads together as a group and brainstorm ideas that are applicable to your corps/squadron.

But most importantly, don't be discouraged and don't let your subordinates see you being discouraged.

I have been talking to my CO for months about having a Chiefs Board for myself, another PO1, and two Chiefs, since January, and nothing has happened yet. I have been studying like crazy, and it helps that I come from a line of military family members. This year is the last year for my CO being in command, and the three cadets senior to me are all aging out right after annual. I would like to maximize my chances of getting CPO2 by annual, so next September when we get our new CO, he will know we have one Chief, and I can assure him I will be the most loyal cadet to him for the two years I will be Coxswain.

The problem is I have been battling with trying to get our Chiefs Board for four months, and we havn't heard of any news regarding this. I have 5 training weeks of cadets left, and to have a Board, and get promoted in that time, I feel will be next to impossible. I am extremely frusterated, and anxious to hear some news. I understand he has alot on his plate, but the four of us are all a little put down by this.

*** Off topic, in order to maximize my chances of doing well in the Chiefs Board, my best friend from a different Cadet Corps has given the advice for my to make a resume and/or cover letter for my Board. My parents thing it may be a waste of time, but on the other hand I feel like the officers who will sit on the Board won't know how time I have put into cadets, what I have achieved, and what my role has been over the 5 years I have been in cadets.

Do any of you have any thoughts on any of the above issues?
Thank you. :seasalute:

This past Tuesday, I sat down with my CO and we talked about me starting the enrolment process. Everything went well as we are now beginning it! :D I am beyond excited as I just want to stay involved in the program as much as possible. I think cadets is one of the best youth programs out there and want to give back by helping out in anyway possible! It did so much for me!

I'll keep everyone updated as the process progresses!

Everyone always thinks that if you get ANAVETS you are guaranteed a staff position and you will get Senior DPO of a division. This isn't even true! Some say "It is the most prestigious award a cadet can hold" it's not! It is the most prestigious award a cadet may receive at a summer training center... It is the second lowest medal a cadet can receive! Right above the service medal.. So when people try to compare and brag about ANAVETS, i don't know if I'm the only who gets annoyed, but for me, it's a pretty touchy subject.

I received the CDS Coin of Excellence myself, in my TG3 year at HMCS Ontario, and until now, I've never said anything about it.. It means you were good that year... But one could have totally destroyed his/her chances if they weren't very efficient at their home corps.

Little rant... Anyone agree? Disagree? Why/why not?

Each unit is run differently because of the officers, CIs, and senior cadets in it. If you don't like the feel of the corps, then keep looking around, don't give up or give in.

I guess you could say I'm lucky. My father was top cadet of his squadron back in England, and he came with me visiting army cadet corps here in Canada. I literally checked out 4 corps before I joined the one I'm currently in, either because it didn't impress, me, didn't feel right, or my dad said 'You can find better!'.

I'm not here to insult any particular corp/squadron, or to promote mine. I'm simply stating that this decision to join cadets can be the best decision in your life (as a young person), but can also turn out quite fowly from how it could go. I drive over 40 minutes and go to the 6th closest corp to my house. I've met hundreds of other cadets, shared stories, and I know that joining my corps was a good thing.

I love my corps, I know I've made the right decision, and I hope you all do to.

It was something I had considered doing for quite a while but I was far too comfortable in my squadron to uproot.....even though I was always frustrated and loosing my taste for cadets.
I stopped showing up to cadets a lot and just figured I would step out quietly and maybe it would go relatively unnoticed.
Then one of the sea cadets approached me at a tri-service annual practice and told me that I should seriously cosider transferring and that it would be fairly easy as I already knew most of the sea cadets.
And well........two weeks later I left my house in a sea uniform instead of an air uniform. So far it has been a good change and I feel as though I have been accepted without any issues....though I could be wrong lol
There are so many new things to learn but I've been doing my homework and catching up......hopefully I will truly understand it all one day soon.

The funny part of it is, all of them have quit since then but me. But on the bright side I have made tons more. Well in cadets I have gone to two summer camps Basic Survial and General Training and had a blast at both. In cadets I have achieved the rank of Flight Corporal and become Captain of the Shooting team. I am also putting together a biathlon team together for next year. That pretty much sums up my time in Cadets.
