Dell Inspiron 1150...

Great machine for what I use it for (pictures, microsoft office and internet)...not much of a gaming box if you're into that though...

Notebooks? You mean scribblers?

I used the ones with the pull out pages this year. I hated them.
Also tried the ones with metal rings. They get all banged up and won't open properly.

It's back to clipboard with looseleaf for me. Then I just organize my notes at home into big binders.

EDIT: Haha! Thanks for making me look old there posting ahead of me, Chris. :p Notebooks back in the day ... lol

I tried that...it went well...except for the "organize" part...that didn't work so good.

I found my notebook of minimal use at school. Its not all that useful for notetaking, because most notes are online.

I have a Dell and pretty good. Would have bought an IBM but I lacked the cash at the time.

I have a Toshiba something or other....

I haven't really needed it at all for school....well it just sits in my room collecting dust pretty much...

A friend of mine just bought one and he loves it. He has to spend really long days at university, so he can bring his work (and fun) with him and use the school's wireless connection.

Other friends use their laptops as their PCs and just leave it in their room. It's easier to transport than a PC for sure. Friend of mine is transferring to laptop because she's moving to BC.

Generally speaking, if you want more options and a better computer for your money, buy a PC. If being portable is your motivation and you're willing to sacrifice speed/memory, then get a notebook.

I use the back of my hand.

Because, frankly, if the teacher isn't good enough to insert the knowledge directly into my brain, then I don't see how I can benefit from his or her instruction.

I took a long time to decide between a laptop and a desktop... finally decided on a desktop mainly because I had a laptop for all of my udergrad and never took it anywhere with me - just sat in my room. So I said to myself, for the amount of money Id spend on a good laptop (Id been looking at a Compaq AMD Athlon 64 for around $1400) I could get way better specs on a desktop. So I did just that... got my comp for that much after tax.

Basically it just depends on if you REALLY think you'll bring it with you... keeping in mind that most dont have that great a battery life, and for one with good battery life you're looking at just under 2000 before tax...

I have a Latitude D600, which I quite enjoy. I have messy writing, so trying to look at notes from September isn't always helpful. Also, it has provided entertainment while is really boring classes (good? bad? you be the judge).

We also use ours for most of our labs (various software provided by the school), which makes labs 10 times faster.

Depends on your major and what kind of person you are. I was debating whether I should get a laptop or not. I ended up getting a desktop instead because a laptop really is impratical for alot of things. Not being able to draw diagrams easily is one of the biggest of notebooks. If you plan to have your notebook as a desktop replacement, that's not such a bad idea, especially when you have to take your computer with you to and from home (ie: if your home is in BC and you go to school in Albt).

Until they come out with a more robust Tablet PC, I'm sticking with desktops, (and I will try to resist the cool factor of carying a notebook).

Of course, you could always bring a mouse with you. That's what I did back in the days when I had a laptop.

Now I don't have the laptop anymore and it wouldn't serve me much good anymore as my job makes me use the computer at work all the time.

It depends on my class...for my arts courses, I use it a lot. For Chem, I usually just took a notebook, because I drew a lot of diagrams -- same for Bio.

I dont really have a use for a lap top, other than maybe for watching movies on teh way back home on the train. I prefer writing out my notes for class rather than typing them. Helps me remember them better. Plus I like to keep hard copies of everything, so it saves me printer ink if I have written copies, and the ink for my printer is quite expensive. Fortunately I haven't had to replace them yet.

But yeah, I dont have much of a use for one, and I cant afford one right now. Maybe later on in life.

I wish I had a laptop... because I only have one class where I can come on CW without a laptop.... this one... ahhaha

As far as notebooks go, I rely heavily on my 3 Subject Five Star, red cover. It gets me through my day.

Laptop, eh? Well, that sure would make taking notes much easier...but I'm cheap, so I decided to just use multiple clipboards and looseleaf. It worked last year, so I assume it will work again this year.

I just wanted opinions on them.

So, you start a thread to hear peoples' opinions.

And now you're complaining that you don't like their opinion.

You should work for the conservative party. *zing*

Up till now most of you have told me what a notebook can be used for, and how they don't think they need one.

...

I KNOW what they're used for, and the first thing I said was IF YOU HAVE ONE...

this hurts my brain.

dell inspiron 1150, good for taking notes in class, if you wanna do that, but its a tad heavy for a laptop, you get used to it. could use more memory too

Mike, if you want something totally awesome and cost isnt an issue, check out the new LG LW60... TOTALLY cool... Im a fan of the Compaqs with the Athlon 64 processors - the newest is the 4025 I think... HP does have some good ones for a good deal now too...

Clearly this is how you play it, use the " we will beat their price guarentee". Go to future shop, get price, go to staples, get them to get lower price, go to future shop with lower price, get them to lower, etc etc etc

Lil Lightnin

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that.
And pretty much down to Dell vs. Apple.

Even drawing diagrams with a mouse is butal. The only "realistic" solution is to get a Wacom drawing tablet, and how many people do you see (aside from graphic artists) owning one of those? (let alone carrying it with them in their laptop case)

Mere Fraser

Mike! what is wrong with you! dont get a dell, for the love of God... Im not a huge Apple fan, but they're way better than Dells... TRUST ME.

Check out that Compaq 4025.

Lil Lightnin

The reason I was thinking of Dell was because I've had their desktops for a number of years now, and they've been pretty good to me (tech support, etc.), but from a couple reviews I've read, it doesn't look like they make a great notebook.

The Apple is because of all this BS spyware, adware, viruses, etc. that float around for PCs now. As far as I know, you don't have many (any?) of these problems with Macs. And you can still use microsoft programs with them, so it seems like a good idea. Also the ibook seems like a pretty solid, well built unit.

That's my logic anyway.

Bright Eyes
26th May 2005, 17:03
Yeah, Apple doesn't have the complications of viruses that Windows machines are vulnerable to. They can get them though. One of the banes of windows machines are macroviruses. They can get in and do a heckuva lot of damage. My professor only found out that he had a macrovirus on his Apple when he tried to send a file to another professor and it showed up as infected. If the recevier would have opened the infected file it would have killed their system. Apparently he'd been infected for 3 months and he hadn't noticed any change in his system. Well ... it had been acting slightly sluggish ... However, correct me if I'm wrong computer dudes, if you got a regular PC and installed any UNIX/Linux based OS then you'd get that same virus invulnerability.

The iBook is an excellent product. Once you get over the inital challenge of getting used to the new commands, then it is MUCH better than anything Dell could put forward. Dells are "discount computers" and sometimes you get what you pay for.

Dick
26th May 2005, 17:18
The whole dealy with the virus thing comes down to the operating system. Since windows is most popular, who do you think someone writing a virus is going to make it for? Windows would be your best bet if you want to screw up lots of computers. It has nothing to do with the company that makes the computers, It the software and OS you're running.

Also if you're using a Windows PC, just get a good virus scanned and be smart. Dont open files from friends who send chain mail all the time, theyre a HUGE spreader of this crap. And for some reason, illegitamite pron site tend to spread viruses too, so steer clear of porno.

I am using a Ibook(old clam shell syle) right now to send this message. The only thing I dont like is the 12 inch screen (new) I books. It is really small which can be a good and a bad thing. but yeah for programs it hard to find one that work on mac. the comment about the viruses are true you get none. and Macs are better for graffics in my opinion.

Lil Lightnin
18th August 2005, 19:17
Well, I completely ignored anyones advice in here and went and got the iBook.
Picked up the 12 inch, and it's ******. AND, to make the deal even sweeter, I got a free ipod mini with it, which was another thing I was planning on getting [someday]...so it made sense to me.

If anyone's in the market, I'd have to recommend the Apple to them.

I won a iMAC - was the best computer I owned.

I then bought a HP Compaq 2100. ****ty computer. THere's a problem with the power jacks on this, and similar type models that basically will kill it and it will cost 600 dollars to repair.

Bought a dell - so far so good, its awesomee.

It's been good to me so far. It'll take me a little while to figure out where everything is, but after I figure out the ins and outs of Mac OS I'm not sure I'll own a windows PC again.
