So how many of you have gotten acceptance/rejection letters from your universities or colleges yet?
I've already gotten an acceptance from Carleton U (Ottawa) and York U (Toronto), but haven't heard anything from Queen's (Kingston) yet. Ah well, they were only my 3rd choice anyways.
I chose Carleton, mainly because they offered me a 10K scholarship + a room on residence, which sweetens the deal to say the least.
Anyone else going to Carleton? :D

What the heck? I can't get conditional acceptance because the semester system doesn't have interim marks for 2nd semester courses and so I cannot self report my last two courses.
Takeru_Kiko
15th March 2005, 16:11
I am not sure exactly how the semester system works but I think there is two semester and each semester is divided into 2 terms? So, UBC would want the marks of subjects you finished in the first semester and for your other subjects, your interim marks, which are your marks at the end of the first term of the second semester? And, the problem is that your school does not do marks at the end of the first term of the second semester? So, the only time you get your marks for the second semester courses is in June, after you finish them?
If that is the case then, at about halfway through the course, sometime in April, you could ask your teachers/office for your marks. Just report what you think you will have. It does not have to be incredibly accurate because it is only conditional and also the provincial exams are not written yet at this time. Things can still change alot. However, they say something about falsely reporting grades will be punished. So I guess it's up to you, although I think it would be okay if you report whatever you have at near the end of April.
Also, I am assuming you are applying to UBC because you quoted me?
Good luck!

Congrats to both of you! I'd recommend vising www.ubcengineers.ca (http://www.ubcegneers.ca). It is a forum community of all the ubcengineers on the UBC campus (except only about 10 of us visit regularly). It's an excellent resource if you want to hear what the websites and flyers won't tell you about what goes on here. ;)

Right. I've applied to UBC. Our first term marks comes out before the april 10th deadline I think, but if not, I'll just but whatever mark i have at that moment, even thought it says to wait for the report card. I sure don't want to be rejected for "falsely" reporting grades but I also can't see how they could check interim marks. Or would they actually phone up schools and check records, because I'm not sure whether the ministry collects marks four times a year.

If 82 is the average, I thought that to get into UBC sciences/engineering, one would require high 80's and 90's.
Takeru_Kiko
17th March 2005, 15:50
Well, since Ontario took out its Grade 13 thing, last year's admission requirements were driven way up due to all the people applying. So, this year should be much lower. Everyone with at least 75% is encouraged to apply.
For Sciences, I got conditional acceptance on the requirement that I maintain at least 89%. I heard from others' experiences that the cut-off of Sciences is around 89.5%
Arts is 82% or so. My counseler told me that if I don't get Sciences, I should take Arts but with Science electives to transfer in later years.
And, I guess Engineering is around 82% too.
Globemaster- did you get your UBC package with that FYI book? I think it says where you can check your schedules, but maybe they're not available yet.

That's a matter of opinion.
UBC is a good university, as is UVic. You'll get quality degrees in either.
I'll tell you how each university differs though (in terms of their engineering program).
At UVic, you right away pick whether or not you want to go into Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering, whatever.
UBC is a bit different. All engineers take a common first year, meaning 95% of the courses that you take in first year is taken by every first year engineer on campus. Afterwards in second term, you take a class called Apsc 122, of which describes each engineering discipline (like mech, civil, computer, etc.), helping you to decide which one you want to go into.
Then just before you write final exams, you submit a list which ranks each discipline in order of which one you want to take the most. (like a camp application). Then in June, after you write finals, they start picking people for each discipline based on their marks.
There's just one problem with this though. Yes, you get to experience a little bit of each discipline, allowing you to make an informed choice as to which discipline to go into, however selection of who goes into what is done on a competitive basis.
Take for example my case. When applying to universities, I applied for UVIc and UBC. I was accepted into mechanical engineering at UVic because that's what I was most interested in, and I got it. However I chose to attend UBC. Now to get into Mechanical, I must compete against all the other students that want into Mech, because mech just so happens to be one of the more popular disciplines. :(
I also believe that there are brighter students going to UBC, but that's just me. And the campus looks better than UVic from what people tell me.
So anyway, apply for both, but choose wisely.

To avoid competition, go for UBC, as usual. How did you decide whether you wanted UBC or UVic? Is it just a preference of City life versus calmer, less hectic less rainy weather?

Actually, UBC has MORE competiton, because you have to fight in order to get into the good disciplines by having high university marks. Unless you want to default into something easy to get into like Integrated Engineering, or something.
I chose UBC because I heard it was better to UBC, and your marks had to be higher in order to get it in. For UVic, I needed a 78% average, but fo UBC, I needed an 84%. I spoke to some UVic engineers also, and they told me that "If you're like 'I want the best, I am the best... go to UBC'". So I did. :D
Actually, the main reason I chose ubc was because I had no idea what each discipline involved, so I wanted to find out by taking the common first year.

Right, i meant to put down Uvic has less competition, but brain and hands weren't coordinating. Those "Go West" presentations must be false advertising then, saying that they produce the best engineers, but I do see why UBC would produce better engineers.

Canada is actually recognized for producting some very innovative and exceptional engineers. If you go to either UVic, or UBC, you'll get a good education. (Sorry, I probably sounded biased while I was describing UBC.)
:D
Pretty much any university you go to will allow you to have a good engineering degree. UBC is a bit more recognized, and has a different engineering program, but there are few people who could tell you which is better.
I can tell you that UBC is more competitive, and perhaps a slightly more intelligent breed of people study there, but if you know what kind of engineering you want to get into, and you don't want to have to stress and strain over cometing over others, then fill your boots and go to UVic! (I knew I should have. heh.)
And if you find out that you don't like one university, then you could always transfer if you really want to. Albeit that consumes time and money.
But don't leave choosing your uni to the last minute. I learned that the hard way.

Perfect chance to go spend some time with Ed!
...Or how bout not? lol! Sorry Ed, while we may be on temporary hiatus, my heart is still his, and I don't really want any others right now.
So... in conclusion, shut it Dick! lol! J/k.

You've been accepted to three good universities, but still choose wisely!

I had to choose between $1500 from Trent, $1175 from Queen's and $1500 from U of O.
I had always wanted to go to U of O, so I ultimately chose them. It came down to the wire though. The day before I was going to send in my acceptance to Queens (all I had to do was put the paperwork in the envelope and drop it in the mailbox) I got my acceptance to the UofO. I was so happy.

I'm going to MUN, its the furthest away I can afford to go. The UNBs aren't too bad, UNB Fredericton is in a great city and UNBSJ has brand new dorms.

Yes, I did. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I have no regrets whatsoever about going to UofO.

Course registration? For UBC, it is 9 June.
But even now you can start drafting out timetables, and then register it right away on the 9th! :)
