View Full Version : Your Cadet Tunic

How many people still have them?

Do you ever go back to look at it?

I looked at mine today for the first time in 2 years. I almost forgot what I had accomplished as a cadet.

Is anyone in the same boat?

I returned my tunic.

However, I took all my badges and mounted them in a picture frame. :)

Ching
14th February 2005, 03:51
I'm thinking about doing that... except that I shortened the arms on my tunic... so it won't likely fit anyone else... (my arms are freakishly short... everything else about the tunic fit PERFECTLY, but with the cuffs around my wrists, my WO1 badges were covered by sleeve... so anyway, it wouldn't be much good to them... :) I might just use it as a background to mount my badges in a picture frame... one of my officers did that, and it looks really good, with the pockets and everything...

I was permitted to keep my tunic because I was given a new one just before my final annual review, and I did not sign for it (and therefore, I had two). When I brought back my uniforms, I was told by the SupO to only bring back one tunic, and therefore, was able to keep the new one with all my insignias on it.

I finally gave it back last year (after it spent 4 years at my house) because a chief at my unit needed a larger tunic, and I believed that mine would fit, however it didn't (the arms were not long enough). Seeing that I took all the badges off, I decised to give it back.

Bright Eyes mentioned that her insignias were framed. I only framed my RCLMCE (which cost $50 to do, for a medal that costs only $8.50). Even though I love thinking back of my good ol' cadet days, I like my life better as an officer because I can now do much more than as a cadet.

Good day!

We had this policy at the time of my cadet aging-out that if you were in for 5 years or more you could keep it, so I did. I looked at it the other day in search of one of my funky name tags and had a wierd reminicing moment... It's still in exactly the same shape and on the exact same hangar as the day I left cadets. Wierd.

I gave it all back, and kept the badges...

However I ended up giving a lot of the badges away to people who needed them. Like my 9 leaf WO2 badge.

I still have my whole uniform and it's at my parents' house. I find that my tunic is a vast understatement of my cadet career. All that's on there are power wings, WO1s, shoulder flashes, and my name tag. My exchange badge was never put on it, given that I retired as soon as I got home from it, and I never even got a glider badge or a 6-week music badge. I had a drum major badge and a level III on there for a time...took the DM off when I ceased to be DM obviously, and the III came off once I got promoted to WO2. There were warrant officers at my squadrons who left their drum major badges on even after they got promoted to a higher position...a dumb thing to do if you ask me!

Interesting thing, though...that was the first and only name tag I've ever had, so it was looking pretty beat up by the end. Also, the same knot is still in my tie, 8 years later. ;)

Mine was the very opposite.

Right arm:Gold Star(I refused to take NSCE), D&C, MWO
Left: Marksman, Gold Fitness, Level 4 drummer, and Emergency First Aid.

Anyone have a picture of their medals framed?

Mine, of course, is an understatemnt of my cadet career. A tunic on a wall could never show the amazing experiences that I had.

Mine is as follows:

Left Arm: Shoulder flashes, CPO1 badge, 6 year pip

Right Arm: Shoulder flashes, Gunnery Trade Group III, Staff, Standard First Aid, and Bugler.

I could also put Marksman II or White Sail II on there. Bugler meant more to me, and was a lot harder to get my hands on.

I also have my name tag, corps crest, a poppy, and my gunner's chain on there too.

Mine has my Nijmegen medal..... By far the highest point of my cadet career.... Pretty well Symbolizes the most amazing experience one could have, let alone in a cadet career.

I'd do the march over para hands down.

I still have my full uniform and a tie that was never unknot in the same traveling bag that I put in a little over 3 years ago. I used to collect military uniform parts and such but kind of put that aside when it gotten to an expensive hobby but from time to time I still go around town looking for what others called "junk" (military related items) and safe guard them as a million dollars lottery ticket. I've enough uniform parts to fully fit 6 cadets and with many bit and pieces that I bought from surplus store. I can almost run my own QM at home. The first time I went to the Crown's Suplus in Calgary, I ended up leaving with a green air cadet tunic with 781 RCACC's shoulder flashes, Sgt. Badge, etc. in mint condition (which I was suprise no one from the area got it before me); a bow. pipe, many badges and cap brasses :) also a BIG FAT BILL!!! I still haven't decide what I want to do with my tunic and badges. I think I'll frame it and put it in my room once I move out. Other than that, it'll just sit in the same bag downstairs in the laundary room ramain unzipped with my retirment speech still in the bottom left tunic pocket ;)

Lets see...on my right arm I had: shoulder flashes, TG3 music, staff badge with two years, my standard first aid, and my scuba (note I could have had my marksman 3, WS3, drum major or music 4)
On my left arm I had: shoulder flashes, CPO1 badge and 5 year pip.
Also on my left breast pocket I had my Commendation pin, Navy League Medal of Excellence and my Marine Club Gold Medal.

and my right arm was: shoulder flashes, gunz II badge and pip, standard first aid badge and buglers badge.

I kept my ceremonial uniforms for the sole reason that I bought them in the first place. No way I am giving my old unit the things that I paid good cash to have!

On my left sleeve:
Leading Seaman with 3 good conduct/long service stripes.

Right sleeve:
Seamanship Specialists' Trade badge

Right Cuff:
Drummer's Badge
Senior First Aid Badge

Mind you all, there were plenty of things that I did where I did not get a badge for them. Fleet Training, Ceremonial and Weapons Safety, Advanced RadioTelephone Operations...

As you can all see in the end I spent about 5 weeks as a civilian before getting another uniform with the St John Ambulance. Although the uniform I have isn't as smart as my old navy one. I was proud to wear that blue collar and all the paraphenalia that went with it.

NACSTC Connaught Pin
Name Tag (not sure if it's the original, but judging from the condition, it could be)
Year of the Veteran Pin

Gold Fitness
Cross Rifles, Level 3

Right Sleeve:
GGFG Shoulder Flash
RCAC Crest

As for my old Sea Cadet tunic, I'm not sure where it is. I can't really remember precisely what I had on there, but I remember it was very minimal, I don't think I had any qualification badges on the tunic when I left. Out of sight, out of mind as they say.

I think I have both, not that I ever like the greens.

My tunic is hanging in my closet at home. On it I have my 3 medals (LSM, RCLME, ACSM), my Duke of Edinburgh's Award pin, range pin, nametag, Year of the Veteran Pin, brass buttons and collar pins (and CWO pins on the shirt). On my right sleeve I have my Master Cadet and CWO badge. On my left sleeve I have my marksmanship level, fitness level, standard first aid, level 3 musician, and International Exchange badges (of course I also have my "Ontario Regiment" shoulder flashes and my RCAC badges).

I still have the first tunic I was issued as a new entry. It's pretty small on me now, and doesn't have any of the original AC-LC badges. The one that actually fit me was returned when I decided to leave but I kept my rank, my Warrior corps crest, and lanyard as keepsakes.

When I aged out I gave my uniform back except for the badges of course which I sewed onto a ditty bag I made on shipwright in 2002. I put them there because I use the bag all the time and everytime I look at it, it gives me the feeling that I actually accomplished something in my life even though I only made it to QPO1 I made the most of my short Cadet career (3 years) I achieved alot. Why is it that when you age out you always end up with alot more uniform parts than you were issued??? I still have a couple gunshirts and turtleneck sweaters for some odd reason. The one part of my kit that I wanted to keep the most was my dress blues but I decided to give them back to give someone a chance to wear a uniform that is in dwindling supply #'s. The badges for that I also kept seeing as how I shelled out a lot of money for them. (all my blues badges were gold wire.)

I found this to be an interesting topic. I have many souveniers from my many years in the cadet movement. Like many of you I did keep my tunic for awhile but eventually took the badges off and put them away for safe keeping. The one item that I kept intact was my cap and tally because I was the first cadet (and first to have it on) to receive the "corps" tally, as opposed to the old 'Royal Canadian Sea Cadets' tally, in my corps. I still remember the CO bellowing for me and holding it high above his head so that no one else would get one before me. This was done during our canteen break and for evening quarters I had already placed it proudly on my cap.

Like most of you, I didn't keep my tunic. My corps' stores officer was a fanatic about returning tunics, pants, overcoats, boots (though I did get away with two pairs!) and web belts.

I did keep every badge I have ever gotten, though, as well as all my certificates and stuff. I looked at all of it the other day. It really is amazing what I have accomplished as a cadet. There are things, like getting my cross rifles level 2, that normal people rarely have the chance to do.

I still have *a* jacket of which I'm proud. Not a "tunic" though, but the original Air Cadet Blues battle-dress jacket with the black flashes and badges. I didn't keep the (gawdawful) green tunic, but I do have all flashes and badges that I'd recieved over the years in a frame up in the hallway.

I still have my tunic somewhere. By the time I graduated, i had removed almost every badge I was entitled to. That is, of course, my power wings and rank (Tim: you're absolutely right about wings). I think it was my dissillusionment with the new badge system that caused me to do this. I was entitled to so many badges that they could hardly all fit on my arm. Meh, on to new and better uniforms (I love my kilt soooo much!).

I kept my tunic when I aged out of air cadets in 2001. I never did like a cluttered uniform, so when I was promoted to WO2, I ditched my standard fist aid badge and my band level badge because I thought they looked weird up in the middle of my arm.

I think I had a pretty "conservative" uniform that still reflected my accomplishments during my seven years.

I never did get my silver square air rifle pin for competing in the provincials two times...if any one wants to help me out here....

So, here's what I had

-WO2 Ranks, Sqn Shoulder Flashes, and name tag (obviously)

-LSM and LME medal (got the legion 75 in my last week and never got it mounted)

-Excellence Fitness, AIC, SLC Octagonals

-Power Wings

-Lanyard, not one of those fake Para cord ones either....

I guess I'll be picking up one of those new "Long Service" medals to add to the collection, I plan on getting all 4 medals mounted someday.

No, you're not being rediculous. Defffinetly not. For some people its really hard, and for others a month or two after they are competely fine.

I retired 5 weeks ago and its still rough. It really depends on the person.

Yeah, I'm going to be forced to leave early because of joining the big boys in the reserves. It really pains me to hear everything everybody else has accomplished. I mean, my sleeves DO have badges up to the elbows, but I don't have any medals, even. I know that as "Sgt Patch", I touched a lot of peoples' lives this summer @ staff, but I really feel now like it was all futile. What good have I really done? If I hadn't been there, there still would've been a staff in my place, one maybe that didn't let her emotions into the dealing with the troops...

Nothing lasts forever, and although you'll be out of the system you will still retain all your experiences and memories ... and that's whats really important.

What I consider my last act as a Cadet was raising the Army Cadet Camp Flag at Blackdown on my last day there, as about 3-4 hours later I was sworn in as an Officer Cadet.

Gave the whole thing back when I returned my kit. I had more work to do than pick and choose what uniform parts to keep. (sobbing...) Besides, my focus in my last year of high school served me well!

Never got my F/Sgt badges (sobbing...)

I kept my uniform .. my mom has it .. I think that she misses me being in cadets more than I do.

Left Arm: Shoulder Flashes, CPO1, 6 year pip

Right Arm: Shoulder Flashes, Masterbandsmen Badget, Staff, Standard First Aid, Drum Major's Qual (it was a qual when I got it)

I have a corps crest on there too, but that's about it .. I think that my mom is gonna mount it in a frame and stick it next to my prom picture or something .. LoL

I think...if we have to give them back...they should give us the option to buy them if we really want them that badly. I dunno. Even for all the sewing that goes into it. Putting everything on, and then having to pull it all off when you age out...it doesnt mean as much after.
I still have every intention of keeping my tunic though. On it I have...

Bronze Range pin

hmm... I had to give my tunic back - we had just switched to the "new" navy blues when I aged out. I still have my ceremonial blues, complete with the zipper that never really worked, so I had to step into it like a pair of coveralls

I also still have my cap, my brass, my webbing...and my parade boots. They served me well when I joined the Reserves; I never had to start a new pair!

Last month I returned my uniform. Before I did that I removed all the badges from my tunic. Mom took the badges from me after and told me she was planning to do something with them. So on October 7 of this year I was no longer a cadet. I cried so much. I held it together to drive home from one of my CI's house to my house. Now I am kicking myself in the rear so hard because I found a combination of buses that can get me home and then to HMCS Cabot on time for cadets if I was to join #3 Terra Nova. So tomorrow I am going down to Cabot to talk to the officers about joining cadets again. I know if I do join again next fall is going to be so hard on me when I have to leave for good. Maybe I might become an officer then.

I kept a few items:

1 -the badges (and more importantly the shoulder flashes)
2 -the parade boots (who wears size 13 anyway?)
3- the wedge (beloved wedge)
4- PT gear

I have a few tunics right now, I'm looking for the Navy White tunic.

I kept one set of a full uniform. Except now I have more than that after 2 summers as a CI, like tons of dress shirts and such. And yes I still have (and wore this summer) my original cadet boots. As for the tunic, it's safely in my parents house, in my closet next to my prom dress, with all its badges and the like.

I actually just found my tonic for the first time since 2002, this Christmas. I thought it had been lost in a move.

The funny thing is, I get the nostalgia, but it also reminds me of the quals I wanted to get but never did, like Power, drummer proficiency level (I was a drummer for 4 years and a DM, but there was nobody to test us), a range award, and especially my Gold Duke of Ed. I did all the practical requirements, but never applied for the award.

I think you did fairly well for yourself.

I found my old tunic a couple years ago, and I was in when tunics were all Green. The highest I went was P02 and I was the RPO. I left the program at 17 due to personal reasons and never had the opportunity to be "Retarded"...or "Retired".

My qualifications were average (Bronze 5 Sail, 4 year pip, Ship's Writer badge, Standard First Aid,) and these were in the days when we didn't have Trade Groups or "Phase" levels, and Sail wasn't a recognized "Trade Badge" - we had to use the profiency/skill slot to denote our sail level.

Later in life, my First Aid qualifications allowed me to get jobs where it was a requirement, and I continued my qualifications and received extra training where I've used it on multiple occasions for everything from minor sprains and strains to wound management and cardiac life saving.

When I look at my tunic, I look at it not for what it doesn't represent, but for all the fun and accomplishment that I had in it. Even though I didn't end the program where I felt I should have, I have no regrets.

Without one qualification, or one major appointment, just being in this program means you are better off, than not.

To me, I find it odd to want to keep your tunic.

Back in the day, we weren't allowed to keep a tunic. Not that I wanted to keep mine anyway. Why would I? I had a great time as a cadet, but just don't feel the need to keep an article of clothing from when I was a kid. I kept all the badges on my uniform when I retired. That was more of a sentimental keepsake.

I have plenty of pictures of me in my kit to remind me. Same thing when I crossed over to the Dark Side. Got rid of all my army stuff, just didn't need it anymore. Except my combats of course.

I agree! Oh By the Way!!!.....You're still not supposed to keep your tunic...It's crown property, having said that I can understand the sentiment. However, If it's collecting dust....why not return it. Badges etc can be kept.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping the tunic; I still have mine, and it's sitting along with my blues and other cadets stuff in my closet where it is easily accessible for viewing when I want to be nostalgic.;)

My tunic looked as such:

Front:
-"Victory" corps' badge
-"Dollis" nametag
-Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Medal
-Gunner's Chain and Call

Left arm:
-Royal Canadian Sea Cadets shoulder flash
-"Victory" shoulder flash
-CPO2
-5 year service pips

Right arm:
-Royal Canadian Sea Cadets shoulder flash
-"Victory" shoulder flash
-Gunnery trade badge
-3 pip denoting TG3 qualified
-Staff badge
-St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid
-Marksman qualification badge
-4 pip denoting Distinguished Marksman

Your tunic has a zipper? LUUUUUUUUCKY Mine has buttons and a bib like collar.

I even managed to find all the badges I earned and sewed them on. I have it rolled the old RCN way in a foot locker.

the more things change,, the more they stay the same.
I was a cadet in the 1980's--yeah, I am giving my age away.

Cadets were in green uniforms then,,, there was no real hard fast rule, some of us kept our tunics, some of us kept our badges.. needless to say, it's seem to be the same today.

For myself, I kept my badges. As an officer, I am still collecting badges, awards and medals that simply cannot be put onto the CF uniform.

Often, our tunics are certainly not indicative of any cadet/officer career. Getting these items mounted in a frame of such kind it probably the best way to capture the highlights of any career.

Unfortunately, in a fit of rage ... I gave away my tunic but with only one badge on it. It was my shoulder flash. I kept one though and all my badges that were on it. I should check if I have them all and get them framed.
