I don't think there is any one particular career that cadets prepares you to do ... except be in the military. Surprisingly, not a lot of people in cadets continue on to be in the military. Of me and my two brothers, I'm in the CIC, one is in the reserves, and one isn't doing anything of that.
Cadets does prepare you for any career that is fast paced where things change at a moment's notice and you have to adapt. It also prepares you for a job teaching, since you teach classes a lot. Also, any jobs that deal with public speaking and public relations would also be good if you like that aspect. So, I'd say cadets can prepare you for any job since most jobs contain those aspects.
To keep your options open, I'd suggest you take a wide variety of courses. Most people find out what sort of subjects they like when they're in high school. Take a little social studies, a little english, a little science, a little art. Basically, take a wide variety of courses. Since you don't know what you want to do, you don't want to miss out on taking the prerequisites for a program you might want to enter into.

There's a nice list of people who made it big, who were in cadets. Comedians, Astronauts, a tonne of things. Cadets helps with most careers. If you were lazy when you joined, you hopefully won't be after you age out, you know how to lead and follow, so you won't tell the Floor Boss where to go when he asks you to take T6 over to packaging.. :o

I think it's a lot better not to know what to do when you finish school. If you can only think of one thing to do and you only prepare yourself to do that ... then when you finish training for the job and you don't like it, you're pretty much stuck.
Whereas if you don't know what you want to do, you'll prepare to do any sort of career, and if you decide in 5 years that you want to be something else ... you can do it. :)

Completely agreee. I'm in my first year of University, and I'm still not exactly sure what I want to do!
Although I likely won't be an engineer. I'd just rather have an engineer's skills under my belt. :D
I'm pretty sure I'll be joining the military though.
In any case, Cadets is an EXCELLENT experience. The things you learn there are useful in nearly every career. And it looks good on a job application. :D

Just to add to the Engineer bit...my dad was saying that a bunch of people they hire at the bank are Engineers. Not because they use the degree, persay, but they use the thought process taught.
Friend of our family did her Engineering degree and is now going back to do her MBA.
Certainly an awesome degree to have :)

The cadet program was originally created to prepare young adults and teenagers for service in the branch of their particular league (be it Army, Air, or Sea).
The program has focused much less on military preparation, and Cadets is a program of leadership development that is suppose to provide a basis and foundation for you to go into the real world and help you function.
You will not see the benefits now, but give it 5-10 years and you will find that if you were successful in this program, you generally have a step ahead of your peers in areas of responsibility, maturity, and leadership.

I 100% agree with you, and to be honest I don't think we'll have to wait at all, I'm already beginning to realize that cadets are one step ahead in these areas and we are better off for it...

Just to get into engineering now would probably require you to have an 80% average (in particular for all those math and science required courses). Once you get in, I would say that by experience about a third of the students drop out after first year (and this includes students who are above average in high school). And yet even more drop out in the next couple of years. But if you can survive the first three years, then you should be OK!

Educators rule the world? At least that's what my brother keeps saying. ;)
Nobody's mentioned this yet, but cadets gives you a tremendous boost if you plan to become a professional pilot. ;)

Hanging tough for three years. Doesn't sound too bad. Maybe at UVic, all the partiers would have left dropping off the 1/3.

Define "Average". Average with respect to what group? The high school class? Cadets?
I'd say the communications, problem solving, and conflict resolution courses, and even some aspects of CHAP are the most significant contributions of the cadet program to my professional skill set. Pay attention to these when the other staff cadets are sleeping.
