View Full Version : Rank sleeve crease on the gunshirt

Hi everybody!

I have one question about the rank sleeve on the gunshirt. Should there, or shouldn't there be a crease on the sleeve, where the rank is. When I was a cadet, the left arm was rounded if you had your rank on. However, around 1996-97, I began to see these "horrible" creases on the left sleeve.

This summer, I finally went to ask HMCS Québec's coxswain, CWO Boisclair, the answer to the question. He told me, "il y a pas de pli sur un grade" or "there must not be a crease on a rank."

Therefore, using the image annexed below, please tell me which is better, A or B.

Good day!

The CATO mandates creases down the front of the shirt and down both sleeves. It looks better if you can crease the rank badge precisely down the middle, but having one sleeve creased and one flat would look pretty silly.

Well I must admit the badge would look better without the crease through it I have always been taught to put the crease regardless.

I was able to find a CATO reference but it doesn's say anything about the badge. It just says the creases should be there. That's it.

CATO 35-01
I. (2) The gunshirt shall be pressed so as to have creases as follows:

(a) a crease along the upper edge of each sleeve, and
(b) a vertical crease down the centre of the front of the gunshirt

If someone can find a refernce about the badge I would love to see it.

It should be assumed, that since gunshirts are WORN with a rank badge, there should be no need to include this in the description. The crease is there, regardless of what stands in it's way. :)

I think i was told not to crease a crown, so any rank that had a crown in it should be ironed flat..although none of us ever practiced it since i have never had a gunshirt rank on! ever!
hahaha the only time i wore gunshirts prettymuch were summer training, and on course you don't wear one, and on staff acadia folk don't wear them either!

I have always been told to iron a crease in my rank badge, plus I think it looks better with a crease in both sleeves than in just one.

You ARE supposed to put a crease down both sleaves, whether or not there is a badge on it or not.

What I do with my gun shirt is I put a crease in the rank badge but not a very sharp one, and the rest of the sleeve that is not taken up by the rank badge I put a sharp crease in it.

Yes, right through the badge it goes. It is better if you can get it exactly centred - like my CPO1 badge is. I think it looks good with a crease.

I personally think that a sharply creased badge looks amazing. Especially since it is a lot stiffer, it takes a lot more effort to get that kind of sharpness in a badge. Plus, like was stated before, creases go all the way down the sleeve, including the badge.

exactly. sharp creases down the sleeves and the rank badge. to the image above. i would have to say that B is better

B is definitely better, and follows the regs to a T, as opposed to the fist image.
