Do you think sailing on lakes for training makes you better for sailing at sea, because my unit (T.S. Rangiriri) mainly sail on lakes and we carve it up at our regatta's.

Hey ya sailing on lakes is really good for you to learn because u get more wind and you dont have to wrry about the tide and very stong curents.. i sail on the okanogan lake its killer fun.....But then on the ocean u have tons of other ships and power boats that help you learn and practice rules of the road so i say they both are very equal......

I've never sailed anything smaller than a whaler at sea,so I'm not sure. But my corps does lake sailing, and it gets pretty intense!

Im not a Sea Cadet, but I sail.... Lake sailing is awesome. I prefer it to sailing where I live, spcifically b/c we have no wind, at all. Why we have a sailing school Im not so sure.

I learned on the Ocean, and sailed in Lakes twice, loved it both times.

i've sailed in lakes... but nothing beats the taste of salt water spraying in your face :D and where else in canada can you sail all year round ;) and just to clear this up...where i live in BC it can be soo windy in the winter and spring...so yes...BC gets wind just not so much in the summer.

Heavy winds most of the time at North-Sydney, but our echo's are no match. :( Fairly good winds and its on the ocean, close to the NFLD Ferry.

Sydney Harbour is awsome... Aside from the fact that all the sewage is going there raw. :(

I liked sailing at mira better... although it's really cool watching the ferry

Mira was like 10 ft deep where we sailed and there was hardly any wind the days we went. :(

i much prefer fresh water lakes over the ocean. the ocean you get all wet and salty, and the spray stings the eyes... :( fresh water is rather inviting, and usually warmer (except for when i go sailing, it seems) :), but heck! sailing is awsome not matter where you sail!

HA! I beat you all! My corps and all corps in the Lower Mainland sail on the Fraser River where there is no wind at all!

There is one thing about sailing on small lakes i find is that the wind shifts a lot more on lakes then it does on the ocean.....and on the lakes you dont get the swells like on the ocean...
but i could always do without the salt water that gets accidentally swallowed...

I've dipped my head in either coast and I prefer to sail on lakes, however I don't think you can call yourself a sailor until you've spit out a mouth full of salt water and/or been prickled by jelly fish.

Sydney Harbour (Australia) is not a bad place for sailing, except there tends to be a fair bit of traffic (my rules of right-of-way are a bit rusty). Brisbane Waters (near Gosford) is a wonderful place. Some call it "the playground of the ANC". Chipping Norton was pretty good, except the local wind conditions made it difficult (little wind during the middle of the day, but a good strong breeze down the channel in the last 2 hours before sunset).

I prefer sheltered waters, as I don't have to worry as much about tides and currents. Either way I like sailing. :sea:

We sail around Sydney Harbour (Aus), and i guess every person has their own preference to where they sail, i personally prefer the sea to lakes because there's no mud, you can play with the waves and there are so many beaches to visit as you go!!!

Why don't you go out around Vancouver, perhaps Jericho. Sailing there some times gives me that wonderful feeling of "I am definatly going to die."

There is wind, just sometimes not more than the current lololo The past two sail weekends have had winds up to 15 knots.. If I recall correctly when it was FRASER's Sail Ex we had 6 or 7 groups out there capsizing lololol They always surfaced with smiles on their faces :D

We actually scoped out Jericho when we did our "let's find a suitable location for a sail centre in the lower mainland trip".... And you are accurate in your assessment on the sailing conditions there..it's quite beautiful... the problem was Jericho wanted an arm and a leg money-wise to stow our boats and gear so it was out of our league :(

Capsizing and Turtling are my favorite parts of sailing. :) But only when it's intentional.

capsizing and turtleing are both fun when intentional and not because when its not intentional u get a real adrenalin rush when its intentioanl it just feels normal....

I have sailed on both lake and sea, but i still think lake sailing is better for you. Your boat rides lower in lake water, so you learn to use the boat to upmost preformance, and the lake we sail on is VERY WINDY.

+ there's nothing wrong with drifting, it teaches you how to take advantage of every little gust, just so you don't hit the bridge :D
