My Religious Studies class was asked to think of soem bands/musical groups that we believe to be modern day prophets.
I was thinking straight away of U2.....what are your thaughts?
And songs that speak out about a cause etc....if you understand me.
For a song I was thinking maybe "Mad World" by Gary Jules.
Give me your thaughts and opinions

I think for the power they wield and the overwhelming capitolist backing they enjoy, and as a result the values and beliefs they're imprinting on young minds, that pop icons like eminem and britney spears would tick the cake as the materialist life which they preach is a religion onto its own and the dollar is it's god. The cause they preach is to go out and buy buy buy and thier masses are the disenfranchised youth which are growing in numbers.
Though it sure would be great to live in a world where this responsibility fell onto the likes of U2, and I suppose it must be said that thier message and that of many other informed and compassionate artists has not been lost onto a large cross section of society.

I think that modern day prophets within bands and music groups are very common. Celebrities and pop icons donate billions of dollars every years to charities. Plus, these celebrities also encourage people to donate money as well.
For instance, the Backstreet Boys, a very famous music group, each member has there own charity, or is affiliated to a charity for different causes. Just think how much more 5 famous guys can do that 5 regular everyday Joes cannot. So slapping a famous face on anything is a good way to advertise something and attract others to help.

sorry..I misunderstood my own question..!!!!
I had to find a song where the composer/band etc is speaking out about something in the world.
I chose the song "Games without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel.

Try
Industrial Disease by Dire Straights
That's got a pretty good message and speaks out about the world :) It's fairly self explainatory too. Although the one line "They want to have a war to stop the smiling japanese" is kinda funny, and out of date...

Earl Simmons (aka DMX)
For real, the Dog is a straight preacher that the streets can relate to.

I think that the former band Rage Against the Machine is a prophetic group, especially in social and anti-capitalist movements.
