I feel bad for the Carribean countries. There's a lot to make of the Gulf coasts of the states being hit, but they have direct support of a strong government. I feel bad for them too, but it looks like Hurricane Gene is ready to knock them out for another round.
The worst storm I was ever in was on a survival ex just off Salt Spring Island on Van Island. The weather had been beautiful all day...great day of sailing we got in. The idea was to sail around to this cove just off Crofton, beach our boats, make camp, then spend the Sunday sailing back. I remember it was really hot, then it started to cool down and go overcast and around 1500 the winds picked up...given that there is an Archipalego of islands in that area, the wind whips through fast like a Fjord.
Within 45 minutes we were in rolling seas, and about 30-40 knots winds. We snapped the mast on the Cal20. I've never hiked like I hiked that day. All of our gear and our boasts were swamped, but we all made it to shore safely. The storm lasted another two hours, and from there the rain lasted until about 0200. We went prepared, though, so things worked out as they should've.
