Canada currently has 6 UMA (Unmanned Aircraft). All 6 are working in Afgan right now as well, but we are getting more of them! Thats awsome.

We have 6 now? It seems to me when I saw this on the DND site awhile ago, there was only four. Your right, this is awesome! :D

hmmm...interesting. I never knew we had any, let alone having 6. I'm just surprised that DND had enough money for that stuff after all the complaints that we don't have enough. I igured any extra dollars would be spent on getting new helos inplace of the aging Sea Kings or on maintenance (or purchase) of naval ships and the CF-18's

Didn't they crash a couple of them not too long ago?

A couple of what?

A couple of what?

the UMAs, I think a couple of them crashed during test trials

and the reason for this investment is because the CF is looking for ways to downsize and consolidate, UMAs are real good for this, or so I've been told. I'm sure one of these air types can explain it better than I.

Think of it as a very large remote control airplane. An airplane that can do cool things like spy on the enemy... while they're in the shower...

I thought they were called UAV's (unmanned arial vehicles).

The army(or air force?) have a few Spewer systems In Afghanistan that they bought from France, but I believe of the four they bought, 2 or 3 have so far crashed, forcing the Germans to keep their unit of UAV's in theater for longer then expected.

I worked in the German Battle Group Command Post in Afghanistan. My job was to control radio traffic between headquarters and the German CP. They crashed their planes, just as much as we did ours.

It's rough terrain out there, and they are not easy to fly.

I would say at least once a week we were sending people on "hunting" trips to find the downed aircraft.

Thats what it said in an article in Janes Defence Weekly, I read it whenever I can get my hands on it. I think they CF should recruit a bunch of 14 yearold computer gamers who spend all their time playing games to fly those drones, they're already trained for it :p

It was my understanding that the ones we have operating in Afghanistan were doing field testing, and that DND had decided to go with the cheaper Predator UAV instead.
