Good job on clearing the debt, though. Wish Ontario could do that...*shakes fist at Premier*

Well I guess with all that money Mr. Klein could drop his little healthcare scheme.

You see, we can't because we have a lack of something called "Oil". If we had lots of it, we could pay of our debts. Also, Ontario owes something like $142 billion in debt. It's estimated that the debt will rise to $148 billion with our current liberal government. If we kept the PC government, the debt would have been closer to $151 billion.

The Albertan Seperation Federation
3,064,249 Albertans, probably just as many hunting rifles. We don't want to register them.
This has been an unpaid message from the Albertan Seperation Federation.

Our debt was never really that much actually. At its worst, it was $22.4 billion in 1994. I don't know just how much money is being saved from not having debt-servicing costs...the Alberta government website is a little vague on that. But here's how I would spend the money.
25% to new tax cuts
20% to municipalities
30% for infrastructure (new roads and rails, and to repair the existing ones which are falling apart...)
10% for education
10% for health care
5% to other areas

What are the taxes here? I lost like $200 off of my paycheque to taxes!! It wasn't that much in Ontario!
Congrats on being debt free though, Alberta. Rock on. Maybe put some of that non-debtedness towards fixing up all the damage from that hailstorm last weekend! holy crap, what a storm!

You'll have to scroll down a little to see it. If you want more recent data...too bad, that's the best I could do. The internet is one huge hole of useless information.
Wealthiest may be up for debate, but we're the only ones who are fiscally solvent ;)
The trick will be to continue to diversify the Alberta economy, and put away those billion-dollar oil royalty cheques for the rainy day fund.
And some more money to train more medical doc's would be nice, to. I can throw a rock and hit three chiropractors from my house, but good luck finding a GP actually accepting new patients.

Alberta still needs to put some money in the bank. So saying Alberta dept free is politicaly uncorrect. However they do have the money.

Well, I'm sure if you look at the balance sheet, there are still liabilities - just like any entity. But they aren't due to the debt. It's gone. Finito. Poof.
So, why am I still paying health care premiums?

So that the first thing they do when you turn up in the emergency room is take your pulse, not look for your credit cards.

From Jeffrey Simpson's column in the Globe and Mail, Sat 24 JUL 04:
Why don't BC and Alberta combine to create a new province: Columberta.
Ralph could play golf all year round, we'd get more mountain resorts and an ice-free port while BC would get oil-revenues and have a non-DUI premier.
There are more, but I can't find the link at the moment.

Throwing more money into it won't necessarily solve the problem. Caz, I share many classes with so-called "pre-meds" (or meddlers as I call it) and I'd say about 4 out of every 5 want to go that route for the money, or because they think they're so much better or smarter than everyone else. The other 1 out of 5 is doing it for the "right" reasons.
The province needs to provide the incentive to go into the family medicine practice. It costs a bundle in tuition fees for the MD program, but it's easy as pie to get student loans or lines of credit. You can pay off your debt in about 6 months (assuming you worked during the summers and/or picked up some scholarships) if you specialize. GPs have to build a practice, hire staff, and all that crap before they can even start earning a pay cheque. The last time I checked, they made in the neighbourhood of $22 for every patient they see. You also have to pay your nurse and your office staff and the lease on your office with that money though. It's not so bad if you're sharing an office with 2 or 3 other docs. Anyway, I've deviated from my original point, which is that family medicine is certainly very unattractive compared to other practices MDs can go into.
Now, I understand that people are a little paranoid in our SARS-West Nile society, but they really should stop going to the doctor every time they get a cold or the flu. If people were actually charged that 22 bucks to see a doctor or billed it to their insurance company, methinks there would be plenty of doctors to go around.
Come on, Neill - all I was getting at was that if this is the wealthiest province, and we don't have any debt - then we shouldn't be the only ones paying health premiums.
That's all :)

Why not -- you're the only ones not paying provincial sales tax! :D
(And now I understand why. I'd never heard of a health premium before.)

lol, it's not like Klien dosn't drink. Maybe not drive (that we know of), but I'm pretty sure he's been known to have a few.
Never heard of one? I'll give you the rundown -
unless you make an obscenely low amount of money, you pay $44/mth premium for provinical health care in Alberta. Get married, it doubles to $88/mth. They don't charge extra if you have kids.
$88/mth is double what I pay for extended benefits through work.
It just... bothers me.
