Greetings all,

I was wondering who was planning post-grad studies (MA & PhD's) your plans were. I would be very interested in knowing more about your learning projects or projetcs you know as I am in the process of accumulating ideas for the post-grad level. Right now I have a few ideas put aside (not in order):

- MA -Security and Defence Management and Policy (RMC- Defense Academy)
- MA - History (Queen's)
- MA - History (McGill)
- MA - History (UOttawa)
- MA - History /other (Commonwealth Scholarship Plan- UK: Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and London) or

Go back at the undergrad level and start a law degree:
- Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) (McGill)

Any ideas/experience to share?

Looking to eventually do a Masters in either History or Political Science. I can't really tell which one I like more, or want to pursue more at the moment, so I'm doing a double major.

Hopefully I figure out what I want to be doing for grad school, or I'll be writing not one, but two theses in my fourth year.

I'm about to graduate from my BA in political science and am looking to do an LLB at any university across Canada (for a year, then I'll transfer back to UBC).

I've been planning to apply to medical school since I was about 14. My plan B is going to be a MSc in physics: hopefully somewhere in the relm of medical physics or hydrodynamics.

I'm slowly moving through my MA in Military History at UNB if anyone is curious about that.

I never heard of it - is it fairly new? How is it structured?

It's not new at all, though it's been undergoing some very interesting changes.

UNB is home to the Gregg Centre, which studies war and society like any of the other dozen or so Conflict Centres throughout Canada. What makes it different is that it focuses primarily on the study of the Canadian army, though there is at least one specialist who works on low-intensity conflict and a new research position opened up that deals with conflict and climate. My supervisor is a naval historian who's recently worked on an army topic or two. The Centre maintains its own library facilities and also provides limited funding for graduate students who travel for their research.

There are also hordes of non-military historians roaming about. From what I've gathered there are Canadian, Diplomatic, American, European and Labour historians active.

Sweet deal, I don't think I've seen a lot of posts from this forum about people desiring to get into medicine. Which one were you thinking of?

Oh yeah, USask Med 2011 represent!

You have left out possibly the best graduate school in the country, University of Toronto

I'm halfway through my 3rd year of B.Sc in Physics and Astronomy at UBC. To give myself more time to think about grad school (and to get research experience), I joined co-op so I would not begin 4th year until Sept 2009 (yay 16 months of work terms).

But so far I'm thinking about M.Sc. (and maybe eventually Ph.D) in Physics or Astronomy (more likely Astro at the moment) at:

McGill
Waterloo
UofT
UBC (although I'd want to go somewhere else to get a new experience),

and grades (and money) depending....
some of the good physics schools in the states: Berkeley, Princeton (I can dream!), MIT (still dreaming), etc.

Still have to do more research on grad programs to see how realistic my dreams are!

I'd really like to go to Memorial or Dalhousie, but I plan on applying to many schools, because it is so hard to get in.

Go to Ottawa U. If political science is what you want... Ottawa is where you want to be! :D

I said Carleton originally, because that's where I'm going, but it's really not that hot when it comes to poli sci stuff.

After getting my undergrad at RMC, I'll apply for MMTP to become a doctor, but I fully expect to be told I have to wait five years to pay off my undergrad. But maybe they;ll be desperate enough for doctors? :) I can hope.

Just noticed this forum.

I'm currently working on my PhD in Geosciences (studying paleoclimatology) at the University of Arizona (that's why I'm south of the border now :). I also got my MSc from USask back in 06.

It's the first time I hear about it. I knew UNB somewhat had military history courses but I wasn't aware of the MA program.

So I went on the UNB website and noticed that Marc Milner is the director of the department; that's pretty cool. There's only a few naval historians around...

Prof. Milner's the director until the fall, if I recall correctly. Then it's moving on to Prof. Gary Waite, who's an Early Modern Europe specialist and teaches the renowned courses on sectarian strife and witchcraft in Europe.

I got accepted to UofA and UBC law for sept '08, too bad it looks like i'll still be in kandahar when school starts. UofA has given me a deferral until 2009, haven't heard from UBC yet. My back up was Masters of Strategic Studies at UofC under David Bercuson, but I guess I won't need that.

As a side note, I'm pretty sure that Post Grad studies are what you do AFTER your terminal graduate degree (ie. PhD etc). Everyone here seems to be talking about graduate degrees.

Good point, I should have wrote graduate studies. I meant studies after graduates. I meant studies one would take after its basic degree.

That depends. In the US post graduate studies refers to what you do after you finish your PhD but before you get a position as faculty or whatever. In the UK post graduate studies refers to graduate degrees (you will often be asked what you are doing your postgraduate degree in). So it all depends on the context the UK uses post graduate to refer to what you do after your bachelors the US uses it to mean what you do after you get your final degree. I've heard both used in Canada (depending what part) so take your pick. Sorry if I just muddied the waters further ;)
