Yeah today I was at a job fair here in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, and I walked by the RCMP both and stoped and its pretty cool cause they are hiring and I'm thinking of becoming a RCMP Officer. The one guy who I was talking to asked me 5 simple questions they were:
- you are a Canadian citizen
- you are of good character
- you have a Canadian secondary school (high school)
diploma or equivalent
- you have a valid, unrestricted Canadian driver's licence
and
-you are willing to relocate anywhere in Canada

I said yes to all of them and so I'm thinking of becoming a RCMP Officer.

In Canada, most police services have found 'public order unit' to be the more PC term. All large cities have them, and the RCMP and provincial police forces have regional units they can call up and deploy as deemed necessary.

thanks sir,
if i were going for rcmp my first choice would be the elite swat team, then second would be what i like to call riot controll police or as you stated "public order unit".

LOL

You should apply. The police services need enthusiastic applicants. Just remember everyone has to do some time on the road before applying to the elite units. It's not easy, but its a fun game to play.

BTW. In Ontario, most public order units are part time. The members consist of police officers performing their regular duties and are called into action when there is a civil emergency.

I'm a member of the Public Order Unit here in Toronto. We sure do look nice in all our neat kit, but we also really know how to get on and off the bus like pros!

what you are looking for in the RCMP is the ERT or Emergency Response Team
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ert/ert_e.htm

and as per Public Order Unit I have not been anywhere in Canada where they have called it that, may use it as a form of description but usually call it something special... for the TPS they call it the ETF (Emergency Task Force) the Opp call it ERT as well

some other cool things to look at with the RCMP is INSET, or the CFSEU (this one is really cool)

Cheers

The OPP have two, arguably many more.

Regional teams, made up of line officers that are called out or assume specialized duties and do most of the hard work (search & rescue, physical evidence searchs, high risk containment and warrants...etc) called ERT (Emergency Response Team), and the dedicated unit that does all the cool stuff (bomb disposal, hostage rescue, high-risk warrant resolutions...) called TRU (Tactics & Rescue Unit).

The TRU have 3 distinct teams (London, Barrie, Ottawa?), whereas ERT staff are collected from detachment members across a region. ;)

There are also a number of specialized units, such as negotiation, medical, aviation, dog, marine, and fugitive enforcement teams which are considered SRT's (Specialized Response Teams).

What's funny is that Canada, by far, isn't an overly aggressive society. Despite having incredibly restricted firearms laws and policies, we do have a ton of firearms, but ask the average Canadian and he'd probably be offended if you asked if he carried one.

We're a fairly liberal society noted for being "Lovers, not fighters"...yet we regularly have shocked other nations with the skill and professionalism of our Army and Navy, and even have been accused of being pretty good at "making war". A decidedly anti-Liberal thing.

We're like the Amish with a power drill. We won't own one, but we'll do wonderful things with other people's power drills.

Canada is an odd enigmatic country of revolving interdependent values.

Mennonites in the area I live in (basically the sameas Amish, only German) do the same. There's different orthodox's, but it's really only the hardcore Lutheran's that live without modern convention. 85% of the mennonites do use modern conventions.

In Toronto, the "Riot Police" are called Public Order and belong to the Public Safety Unit.

The patch on our arm looks like this:

We also have an Emergency Task Force, however they have nothing to do with crowd/riot management.

I have my PARE in a month. Because of the recriuting drive they have on the, if all goes well I should expect to be going to depot sometime between July and September. In the future, Im hoping to get on the ERT, spend some time as a member and move on to becoming a sniper.

Everyone starts out as a uniform general duty patrol officer. After you do some years and learn how to be a police officer you are able to apply to these specialized groups as positions become available.

Contact a local detachment, division, or the HQ division of any Region Service. They will tell you that you need an OACP testing certification from ATS. The OPP, Toronto Police, Peel Region, and a few other police services do their own testing and issue their own certificates - but you can streamline the process by having the ATS Certificate.

http://www.applicanttesting.com/

From there you are eligible to make an application, plus the administration fee.

Start there.

OPP and Toronto still require an OACP Certificate, they just offer the option of testing with them instead of ATS. You can still choose to test with ATS if you wish. If you do test with Toronto or OPP, you are still able to apply to any ATS subscribed service.

Peel, however, does not accept the OACP. You must test with them if you want to apply with them.

Come join the RCMP...the beat police force in Canada, perhaps the world. But perhaps I'm a bit bias, I graduate from Depot in 5 weeks. Then I'm off to St. Paul, Alberta for my first posting. Anyone know of any cadet units around there? I can't seem to find any.
