UBC Okanagan - as the official Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies representative on CW, I can give you some information. I'm in French, but studying art history as well, and our courses seem to intertwine together. I also park in the fine arts parking lot ;). So feel free to ask any questions - as for reputation, what I perceve is that it is a pretty good school for art - there seeems to be lots of opportunities to show work (that is what I was told from an arts student). UBCO is very interdiciplinary. You will have an academic component to complete as well.

Here's the link to the website http://web.ubc.ca/okanagan/creative/welcome.html

PM me if you have questions

For now, SFU = big thumbs down. Lots of criticism is directed towards the fine arts (except the film/tv); part of that is due to the 40 year old portables theyre in. In two academic years the school is moving to downtown Vancouver which may help the situation.

They've said they're moving for ages...glad to hear that its acutally happening.

Did they absorb what was once Technical University of British Columbia into their fine arts program in terms of new media and design?

Can't say I know a whole lot about fine arts schools, but I would tend to think that going to a school that actually specializes in fine arts would be a lot more beneficial than going to a general university. For instance, here in Halifax we have the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and from what I've heard from the many people I've known who've gone there, they get really good training, and they have some very excellent programs. I know you're not interested in the east coast (which is a shame, really) but it would be worth looking into things like that.

Also, I'd warn against basing your post-secondary decisions on things such as a place being "too flat." I know you're probably joking, but it's important to choose a school and a city that you are going to be able to live in. If you choose a school for the wrong reasons (including "school is giving me more money", "friends are going there", and "want to live in city my favourite American Idol singer is from") you're going to end up disappointed. (By the way, the east coast is less flat than Ontario, anyway. :P)

this won't be my first post secondary endevour, and nither is it impuslive. just my tenure at trent has ended, as much as i like history it isn't really my bag. my plans have always involved going out west because of whistler the north shore and the thousands of trails through the province. as much as east of ottawa has to offer, i just don't feel the calling.

Have you considered the Alberta College of Art and Design? ACAD is a degree-granting institution and has an excellent reputation.

the fine arts dept accepted, and aproved of my portfolio, and everything so far has been very positive, and likely to be granted an offer of admission soon.
