it SHOULDN'T but some units feel setting One as a standard is a good idea (you know uniformity and such) and (Correct me if I'm wrong) the Bun was the first authorized hair style (along with the short hair standards of course)
Just go with what your Commanding officer says. thats probally the best thing to do

At my squadron, buns are standard. Ponytails are strictly never acceptable, and braids are rarely acceptable, unless they're french braids tucked in, with a lot of gel, and absolutely no wispies. I'd say to stay on the safe side, nothing looks sharper than a perfect bun with tons of gel!

Well I'm not a female, but my baby sister was in cadets for a year and she was allowed only one hairstyle and that was a bun. Perhaps its different in other places but for us it was only a bun, nothing else.

At my squadron, buns and short styles are accepted. I believe that double frenchbraids are allowed, but noone ever wears them except on outdoor ex's.
Buns definitely look sharpest though. Even one of my friends with dreads (but short enough to meet short-style standard) puts her hair in a bun! (-gel)

Im not a girl either, but at our sqn, females either wear buns or have short hair styles. Although too be treuly honest no one has ever brought up the idea of wearing the french braids so it's never been presented to us. I suppose you'd be allowed to because it's in the CATO's

Well i happen to know LAC woods sqndrn.... he he, we have some people with VERY thick hair and have alot of trouble getting there hair into a bun, not to metion it is the size of my fist, no bigger, and they do not allow it in a braid.
mind you i'm a guy so i kno very little about hair

My bun is enormous. Seriously. I have long, thick hair, down to my lower back, almost to my butt when it's straightened. And it's layered, another frequent female hair complaint. I don't use bobby pins either. With a ton of pink Dippity-Do, some Goody ouchless elastics and two hair nets, it always looks perfect!

I am the Standards Warrant at my squadron (amongst other things) and while not female, I can comment on hte hair styles. Bun or French Braid is acceptable, as is the short hair. Never do I ever accept the pony tail as acceptable without some kind of chit. Ponytails = PT.

At my squadron, the females always have the bun or short hair on training days but for stuff like our volleyball tournaments and field exercises, they are allowed french braids.

My squadron is just the short style or the bun for parades. Pony tails or braids are OK for sports and bush exercises.

As the SWO of my squadron, it doesn't matter to me as long as the hair meets the requirements outlined in the Dress Regs (CATO 55-04 if I'm not mistaken).

Dress regs now state that hair can be braided in a pony tail and can extend down the back but the length can't extend past the shoulder blade.
At least for the Air cadets.......Still haven't seen it for the sea or army so carefully at the Pac Reg Band comps... ;)

Females are also permitted two have two braids down the back, as well.

You'd have to be nuts to allow a ponytail in uniform. Ponytails are loose hair; if it's braided, it's a braid.
When I'm a Flt Comd at camp, I tell my cadets that they can do anything the dress regs say they can... but I ask them NOT to do braids because it is much harder to meet the flight standards. They can have NO whispies coming out of the braid or the rest of the hair and no more than an inch of hair after the hair tie (other wise we wind up with braids two inches long and ponytails for six inches.) I tell my staff cadets no braids. IMO, they just look sloppy.

Although it is allowed by the dress regs, I tend to discourage the wearing of braids in uniform because it is a lot harder to make a braid (or braids) look sharp than it is with a bun. In both squadrons I've been with, I don't think I've ever seen one of my cadets go for braids - unless it was a french braid to bun combo.

what about if you can loose a pencil (unsharpend, long ways) is the cdts hair when it is loose?

One of our cadets hair is so thick that you could, and quite possibly would loose a pencil (unsharpened) if you put the pencil into her hair. Imagine that bun!!

Bun bun bun ... the braid rule is really dumb personally and I once saw an officer with a ponytail and well I threw up in my mounth a little bit .. I mean come on it is supposed to be professional! We aren't even aloud ponytails at the Gliding Centre

Everyone does a bun. When we found out about the french braids, people tried it, and it looked bad. I found it unpractical, and a bun looks way slick. Ponytail? never. The ponytail belongs in sports, not in uniform.

in my squadron we are allowed braids, buns, and braids tucked in... as long as they meet certain standards. Sometimes braid are just more comfortable (uniformed trips where your traveling and sleeping on a bus) and sometimes buns are quicker and look more professional ( any form of competition) Either way on normal parade nigth as long as it looks good and meet the catos, no one really care about how your hair is done.

Don't forget about French rolls and V-rolls...they are cool...IMO and they are easy to do...the V roll would look kinda cute with a wedge....
And French braids when done, look pretty snazzy too...you can do them inside or outside braid.
When I was a chief, I had braids, rolls and buns so that I didn't have to wear the same style all the time.

Personally, I always go with a bun. But there's one girl in my sqd., her hair is SO thick! She has to put her hair up when she gets to cadets because she can't go home between school and cadets. Me and another more experienced female were helping her put it up, and it was so strange! Her hair is relatively short, and all we had was acouple of elastics because she didn't know what to bring (first year), so we braided it. It was the hardest thing to braid and came out looking not much like a braid. It didn't go to well. This post is written horribly! Oh well. You know what I mean!

Ponytails are no where in the CATOs, doesn't that mean they're not allowed? Surely an officer would know better than that?

You can have 1 of three styles in our Squadron Woods.... bun, french braid or a double french braid (on the braids it has to be off the collar) we went over it on Friday so you should have a good idea now! :)
see you on friday!

Since we're on the topic of hair regulations, when you have right short hair, it can go an inch below the collar, right? I just got my hair cut right short and I want to make sure. I know it needs to be slicked back, but if it can't touch the collar, I'll have to get pretty creative!

At our squadron, there are few that do braids and many that do buns. Ponytails are only allowed on sports nights.

Female hair may not extend below the bottom of the collar, if it does it must be put up in a bun, or a regulation braid. Cadets should use the shirt collar for this measurement, as the jacket collar is rather large.

Have I been mistaken about braids and pony tails are used for training dress, not cerimonial?

Dress regulations permit braids and ponytails in all orders of dress, for all occasions and events, including ceremonial. However, in the same manner that COs can order a particular standard for the sake of uniformity at ceremonial events (ie. all in parkas or no parkas, all air officers in wedges vice berets or forage caps, etc), a CO can require females to wear their hair up for a particular occasion. The same can be done for safety reasons, (around moving parts for example) or hygeine reasons (working with food).
