I have not done any particular course.
I learned how to finger spell, and some signs when I was 8 years old. My hubby and I took a "Community" Course a number of years ago, that was taught by one of our local deaf people. It was great!
But unfortunately, due to lack of use, we forgot a lot of what we learned. But I can still get a message across using finger spelling.
It is an invaluable tool.
Just don't get caught using it in class. When my hubby was working for the School District, he informed a teacher that 2 girls in the class were cheating, by using sign language. The teacher had no idea that was what they were doing.

I've never taken a course but I did pick up quite a bit by getting books from the public librairy. It's cheaper and you can go at your own pace. Try and get some friends to learn with you. The reason I started learning it was so I could be a big sister to a deaf girl, but I became really involved with cadets and had to drop that idea.
