Do you mean applying to a Bachelor of Social Work? I'd look at the individual schools. However, I very much doubt that volunteer hours would HURT.

I've thought about social work, but I think I'd rather teach.

I'm currently taking my Social Work Undergraduate Degree at York University. I'm in my 3rd year with plans to continue on to my Masters. I have also completed a College Diploma as a Social Service Worker.
To answer your question, each school has different requirements for entry into the BSW program. Most schools have supplimentary applications that require you to describe co-curricular activities. Volunteering is looked highly upon on these applications, and some schools may require a certain number of volunteer hours to be considered for admission. Once you are in the program, almost all schools require a number of "Placement" hours to be completed inorder to graduate. These hours are very much like co-op however (at least in Ontario) you do not get paid for work. In college, I needed to complete 240 placement hours and in university I need to complete 400 placement hours.
I hope that I answered you question to you contentment. If you have any further questions I'd be glad to help out.
