the TG1s sail Echos.....TG2s sail Pirates....TG3s the newer pirates....Silvers...the good boats....
last year at nationals....the NL chairperson guy...said something about getting new 420s....i'm not sure if that was just for nationals, or for HMCS Ontario in general...so cant help you there...

From my understanding of last year,I believe that pirates are being phased out by 420's (maintenance costs are way too much)....but I do believe there'll still be the good old echo's.....and of course, the cheapest boats of all........PETRELS!!!:D:Dlol.....
I was under the impression that Central (HMCS Ontario) was the only region (camp) to still use Pirates, with everyone else having transitioned to 420s.

yes it is still the only camp to use pirates...but i have a though that maybe Quadra still uses them too..and i have heard rumours that ontario will be getting new 420s..but i dunno...it's just a RUMOUR

HMCS Quadra uses both Pirates and 420s. She will be getting Echos this summer.

Pirates are being phased out as they are not a practical youth boat (it has nothing to do with cost.) The 420 and Echo will be the boats for cadet use. Nix on the petrels ;)

yes, he did say that..
and yes i agree.. 420s are nice boats.. but they are crap compared to the laser 2...
Qu'Appelle still uses pirates....
Yeah, as far as we know Qu'Appelle still has pirates I heard they were changing over this year... but well that isn't all that practical with it being the last year for Hotel Qu'Appelle  Anyways i haven't sailed an echo before... can anyone tell me how they stack up, compared to pirates... as I might be teaching kids in Echos?

TG2 Use Albacores  and Pirates (i'd rather the pirates the albacores ... hate Albacores, just as much as I hate petrels  )
and the TG3's (lucky people they are) sail the beautiful 420's.
I was in them once and like someone said earlier.. they bring a tear of to my eye.
Woo Can't wait for this summer.
Hott Sailor Guys in hott 420's! Nothing can top that!

lynn dude its me alex byczko man i didn't know you posted on cadet world. but i must say that the albacores weren't so bad the foam was some nasty stuff though lol have funn at camp if i don;t talk to you.
This may be of interest for all those who berate albacores: According to US Sailing, the Portsmouth rating of an Albacore (used as a handicap in multi-class fleets) is much lower (ie the boat is rated as faster) than anything else sailed by cadets. Here are some sample ratings, modified for use in all wind ranges (lower numbers representing faster boats):
49er - 71
505 - 80.2
I-14 - 85.6
470 - 86.5
Albacore - 90.7
Laser - 91.3
29er - 92
CL 16 - 96.3
Byte - 97.1
420 - 98.2
FJ - 98.3 (Note - the FJ or Flying Junior has the same hull as the Pirate, though the rigs are drastically different)
CL 14 - 103.5
To use this number, take the finishing time of each boat, divide by the Portsmouth Rating, and multiply by 100. This gives the corrected time. For example, if a Laser 2 were to race a 420, and both boats were to cross at the same time, 30 minutes from the start, the 420's corrected time would be 30/98.2x100 = 30:32, and the Laser 2's corrected time would be 30/91.3x100 = 32:26. Therefore, because the 420 is rated slower, it would have won the race.
Albacores, due to their huge sail area and long waterline, are generally faster than all but high performance boats.
Lots more info on Portsmouth ratings at http://www.ussailing.org/portsmouth/.
Way more information than anyone is interested in, I know.
Cheers and Good Sailing,

Hey Alex! Man, you got ontario! I was hoping to see yah this summer.. I'll get over it sooner or later.
I just don't like the albacores at Acadia. I got tons of muscles just from bailing :p
And yes.. the foam was nasty. The bronze challenge was the worse for it. My deck had like.. a foot of foam on it
Have fun at camp this summer man.. Hope to see yah in da future

From my understanding of last year,I believe that pirates are being phased out by 420's (maintenance costs are way too much)..
ok have you ever seen a 420 that is constantly sailed by inexpierienced sailors? cause the deck and hull are two different pieces and the glue holding it together cracks on impact with other things, therefore water leaks into the bow bouyancy tank. which causes serious bow diving issues but i guess if you like getting acquainted with the forestay then it's ok. 420s are strong boats but there is a few fatal flaws with them.(90%) of the auto bailors dont' work. the deck on the bottom right in front of the centerboard trunk disitergrates. the center board trunk can come off pretty easily among other things. and the most important thing, the spinnakers are toooo small, it's like flying a freaking napkin. i would like to see the cadet system invest in some more high performance boats for regattas such as maybe Laser 2s or a catamaran of some sort. i mean if we are getting nice life jackets then why not some nice boats to go with them.(!)

sure the 420's break easier and are probably not good for inexperienced sailors, but at least replacement parts are readily available....that compared with those of a pirate that are pretty much always on special order since it's a boat found only in cadet sailing....

this foam is nasty stuff man. its like salt water/dirt/normal water/other junk. it smells like fish and its brutal i did a gybe once and i ended up capsizing into the foam although it never touched me it totally engulfs your boat and my crew al most got it pretty good lol its just nasty
420's have a lot of great advantages over pirates. The biggest one being the fact that they're used outside the cadet movement, which I believe is the reason that the pirate is being phased back out. They're used all over the place in the collegiate sailing circuit, which is arguably some of the most competetive sailing for it's age group.
A lot of the problem with the 420 submarining stems from the fact that in order to keep the boat balanced, the crew weight does not need to be driven forward - completely the opposite in FJs and Pirates, where crew weight should be as far forward as possible.
Any boat will leak with cracks in it, L2s included. That type of construction is found in almost all newer dinghies. In fact, Pirates and L2s, for example, only have a single bouyancy tank, whereas the 420 has 3!

Yes man. It's always fun to point and augh at people who capsize in the foam.. The foam is actually like.. a light brown color. Kinda looks like the cream you put on lemon marange pie. .I think?? Anyways. It's the grossest thing i've ever seen/smelt/sailed threw.
