Here is a joke from the Chretien days:

Jean(Chretein) decided to walk to parliament that morning. The sun was smiling. Jean said, "Why are you so happy this morning?".
The Sun said, "Because of all the good you've done Jean".
When the day was over Jean decided to walk home. The sun was setting and he didn't look happy. Jean asked, "Why are you sad now. You were happy this morning?".
The sun said "This morning I was in the east. And now I'm in the west."

Neat joke eh.

And to pretend this is an on topic post....ummmm...

lol great joke! To bad that it's true... living in the west with Chretien in power was crappy. oh well hopefully this Paul Martin will be better.

So far Paul Martin did worse than Chretein and Chretien didn't even bother with the west.

What do you mean? And since they're the same party I doubt it would change anything.

SHG
20th May 2004, 13:15
You know the sponsorship scandal thing which has caused people to dislike the liberals even more particularily in the west. And when Paul Martin apointed one of his supporters to run for a riding without a party vote in that riding.

condor888000

Yeah, but Martin wasn't in power for the scandal, Chretain was. And did anyone notice how the date for handover of power was pushed forward from Jan-Feb 2004 to Dec 2003? I think He left early so Martin would be tainted by the scandal and lose the election. Can anyone say payback?

Kinda doubt that, I'm sure he hates the conservatives more than Martin on a fundamental level.

Actually it was Martin who wanted the 'handover' to occur in December instead of February, and it was a miscalculation on his part, which does make me agree with his statement that he didn't have much if any knowledge of the sponsership scandal. Because if he did, he would have waited so Chretien would have still be in power when the Auditor General released her report on the Sponsorship Scandal, thus leaving him (Chretien holding the ball).

I'd also have to agree with the others, even as cold as the relationship was between Chretien and Martin, Chretien would never want to see a Conservative Government.

Martin was also minister of finance during when the scandal hapened. He might of known what was happening or he might of not of known.

I find it hard to believe that Martin DIDN"T know what was going on money wise... it was his JOB to know what was going on money wise...

And btw... The GTA might not be the centre of the universe, or even the centre of Canada... but it's the centre of my heart... *awww*
Actually, not even. But I don't think it's any worse than all those haters in the rest of Canada. I think people from GTA are unfairly typecast as rich snobs. For the most part, we're not. No more than the rich snobs in the rest of the country, anyway.
I think the rest of Canada needs something better to whine about than how they're ignored and living in Toronto's shadow.

As Minister of Finance his job was to divise a budget, x amount of dollars to each department, sometimes marked for specific projects. Not to keep tabs on the money, that is why there is an Auditor General. It is conceivable that Martin didn't know of the illegalities being commited. If he, as Minister of Finance budgetet $500 Million dollars to the Department(s) involved in the scandal, thats as much information as he knew (probably), as Minister of Finance he wasn't needed to know every expendature of the Canadian Gov't.

I think this scandal rests more with the Bureaucracy of the Gov't instead of the political aspect. Might I add, to think this a problem that affects only the Liberals is quite naive. These sorts of occurances happen with all Governments, everywhere, no matter their location on the political spectrum. Does that excuse the practice? No. It's just in this instance they got caught, and I think if the Opposition stopped trying to blame the entire Government which is quite asinine, and tried to fix the problem, things would be alot better for everyone.

As well, that $200 Million probably paid the salaries of many people. Which in turn those people used to buy goods which employed even more people. So even in the outrage over the Sponsorship Affair, there is a bright side. The more money in the economy, the more jobs there are, which means a better Canada for all of us.

Exactly. Funny enough, I saw Chuck Guité say it was because of the sponsorship program (the word Canada on a billboard) that Quebec did not separate. Funny...

And since when was the Federal Gov't responsibilt for the PST or Property Taxes. As well how does the CPC/Alliance plan to cut these taxes to below the level in the United States while maintaining a balanced budget and paying for Health Care, Social Programs and increasing money to the CF?

The numbers don't add up, the CPC/Alliance would have to cut services, because of their lower tax intake.

Indeed, I still stand by my point the CPC/Alliance can't dramatically cut taxes while maintaining a Balanced Budget and keeping Social Spending at the levels needed and wanted by a Majority of Canadians all while increasing military spending. The numbers just don't add up.
